Agree. I specifically love mafia stories because they deal with dark themes, have ruthless characters and you're kept at the edge of your seat so it's exciting. The "crime boss who takes in a partner in debt and would sacrifice the world for them" only works if there's real tension, stakes and threat, if it actually takes advantage of the setting and doesn't just make it another vanilla alpha CEO fantasy where everyone acts wholesome and funny, nobody breaks the law and everyone always asks for consent. These people need to go back to their office romances and high school crush stories.

It depends, honestly. Older works definitely didn't shy away from the darkness of criminal organizations (i.e. Banana Fish which I haven't read but every bit of information I do know about it points towards this). Newer works do what you say sometimes, but there's a fair amount that still underscores the darkness of those settings (i.e. Miscreants And Mayhem, a manhwa). I think the ones that have "secretly good boys" usually are the more comedic ones or the setting is more secondary and/or its mostly implied rather than shown.

If they have to keep their hands dirty or be killed then it is tougher to write without being cartoonish or reprehensible. I've read some manwha where they kept the bad boy bad and when it seemed like people preferred him to the other option they had to make excuses for him not being a complete asshole to the MC and starting to be romantic or tender, and frankly they did not pull it off. I didn't like him at the start and I never found a reason the MC should.

I wouldn't argue that it's good, many things cause a person trauma in the right scenario. But having the ability to come across content that makes you uncomfortable and move on from it is an important skill that I think could easily be forgotten if minors aren't allowed in any online spaces period. Unfortunately, there isn't an easy fix because not only is the internet more overtly political and money-hungry nowadays, it's been used as a tool to essentially raise kids rather than something they can explore at their own pace alongside other activities/discussions.

Chronically online teens can be the worst enemy to adult fandom besides corporations, but it sucks no one creates places for them to have because a bunch of shareholders don't find it profitable enough anymore. This has been making me angry for so long and the recent update is why I hate Hoyoshit and Genshin especially now. All the female harbingers have to be waifus. Columbina was such a big disappointment but they got some "cute yuris" with Sandrone who wasn't an antagonist but just a tsundere. The fandom of course eats up this writing and loves this so no one will ever ask for any female characters with a personality and if you don't love that they're all damsels in distress then YOU are the misogynist. Arle was such a letdown too. She was so popular and Arlefuri was cool for five minutes but then Arle had to be declawed and now she's traveler's friend and all her ships need to be soft and cute too. Anon who posted the original complaint, and I'd rather not, I can't find a single one who doesn't include their cuntboy self insert whenever they lewd canon characters. One of them had a full meltdown because I only ever wrote lewd about the character they like and didn't include their OC. It was super awkward having someone call the admin in and indirectly rant that they hated every conversation with me. Conversations where I was trying to cheer them up and accommodate their preference. There is a plot point in the kuroshitsuji anime, the circus arc. Guy wants to be in the hot criminal club, but he's too ugly and clumsy. The people in the club literally just hang around looking like rich badasses and do absolutely nothing. I don't know if it's filer or not, but that stood out to me because it read- to me- like a jab at ow people write mafias in fanfiction.

I also have been in RP communities since I was 10. It's always been like this. From myspace clones to inuyashajourney. Normies, weebs, they all want to be the sopranos soooo bad but miss the point of the sopranos. Or Tony Montana while jumping around his flaws until they simply want to be the man on the black/white poster. Been in RP communities since I was 10 years old, people claim to be into themes around organized crime but they never want to go beyond losers doing diamond heists or well-meaning golden retriever thugs. It's part of Ciel's backstory but we see the whole flashback as to what happened to him after his death way later. I wish I had more fan friends over 26 to talk about series with. I join 18+ servers but the average 18-19 year old now feels like a child to me. Legal law says they're adults but it feels like talking with a high schooler, especially since some of them still are in high school.

This is a hard one. The best I've managed is all of my friends know I'm a fujo (and know what fujos even are) so if they see some foolishness on weeb social media they come to me for a QRD. Given the current state of they internet they all recognize me as a sort of canary in the coal mine because I was talking to them about how puritanical/rightoid zoomers were getting in like 2015.

I'm blessed with a few niche OTP girlies who are mid/late 30s like me and while I wish we were closer I'm just really glad that they are around. I stopped caring about Evangelion a long time ago but seeing people shit on Kawoshin because of the new content is making me angry. I know we never get anything good with these franchises. I know it's common for a lot of fujos to love doomed yaoi because it's all we get in mainstream franchises but I'm tired. I want guys who are leads and who get together. Even yuri fans get better shows with actual canon couples and they don't settle for slop anymore. I want that. The last anime I remember that actually treated the lead couple well was Yuri on Ice, and we all know what they did to that. At least the original show is still there and the lead end up together. But for other anime I'm tired of feeling like we haven't moved past the 90s at all. I'm tired of unrequited or doomed homo in anime. Then the few times they do greenlight a BL it's a terrible adaptation or they can't make anything with a plot because men would rather see cute girls than anything homo.
