Funny that MAL classifies Babanbabanban Vampire as BL, but not Banana Fish or YoI.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/genre/28/Boys_LoveA variety of China shows are also 'BL' for some reason (like Antidote, Spiritpact or The Emperor's Strategy), despite the censorship in China prohibiting same-sex romance in films/animated media. Oddly enough, Mo Dao Zu Shi is not BL according to them.
MAL has 0 consistency in tagging.
No.3878
>>3875I feel that the more popular a show is, the more uppity MAL users/staff get about how it should be tagged
I've seen No. 6 waver in and out of the BL tag, but I doubt anyone is watching Xiao Lu He Xiao Lan to debate if it's "BL enough" so it's left alone
No.3879
>>3875I think I can answer this. Most of the donghua labelled BL were either marketed overseas as BL or strictly streaming when they couldn't be on Chinese television, MDZS's donghua has the overt gay content cut for maximum television broadcast slots so would not be marketed as BL. Babanbaban might be a shounen title but it has always jokingly advertised itself as a BL, while Banana Fish and YoI did not market themselves as BL on release and Banana Fish is still officially "just a shoujo". They always claim to follow "official sources" from the publishers.
>>3878This too though, I've seen unpopular manga added with stupid tags before because nobody's checking or knows how to check Japanese sites. Chinese media where the source novel was gay but the adaptation is censored are more likely to be left alone.

>>3865>Go For it, Nakamura!I avoided reading this for the longest time because the cover looked like some cutesy SoL bullshit that I'm not into, but anons mentioning that the actual content is different finally got me to read it and I cant believe I actually liked it. The art style is so nostalgic and both the uke and seme are super cute and likeable! And my favourite part was the development with
Hirose and the teacher. It was a bit subtle at first and it didn't get addressed until the very last chapter so it had me second guessing myself and thinking I was reading too much into it kek! I wish there were more volumes because I was really starting to enjoy the direction the story was taking.
It makes me wonder if the adaptation will have an anime-only resolution to the story or if it'll end on a cliffhanger.
No.3883
>>3879>They always claim to follow "official sources" from the publishers.By that logic none of the Chinese shows should be BL.

I have honestly no idea which fujo pandering series I liked classify as BL. I never watched outright BL shows I think since romances aren't my thing but I enjoy the typical action stuff that tends to blow up like some of the anime mentioned here, namely Banana Fish or No. 6.
Think there isn't even any way to tell since anime don't have the fixed demographics like manga that get published in shounen or BL magazines. Looking forward to
>>3867 because I love the retro-looking art style and it doesn't look as generic as the other romance heavy series.
No.3885
>>3884If it has two males romantically involved = BL. Mind you, the tag should be used both to bring in the audience who are into BL and to warn the people who are allergic to male x male content.
I personally think it's hilarious if there still should be anime watchers in 2024 who browsed MAL for sci-fi content, picked up No.6 or Bravern, then threw a tantrum about seeing homos doing homo things or, even funnier, started coping on social media that 'one
two, actually kiss doesn't make them gay!', 'declarations of homosexual love are just jokes, WHY AREN'T YOU LAUGHING?!!!'.
No.3898
>>3897Honestly it was kinda funny how many old school tropes this anime hade, ngl i much preferred the uke's brother and his bf

>>3953I'm very rarely into shota x shota and the scene with the sister was weird as fuck, also Chico is too young for me.
They're all comedy gold though, I just think the only scene I could actually schlik to is one with Mokkun and Pico.
I liked their other OVA (shounen maid Kuuro kun) but they made Miisu kinda ugly in it when compared to how he looks in the doujins kek.
No.3955
>>3954Yeah despite being hentai they are all too bizarre to get off to, including the first one but it might just be it was memed too hard. Never seen Shonen maid and didn't realize they had another OVA, main boy looks cute.
No.3956
>>3955>Never seen Shonen maid and didn't realize they had another OVA, main boy looks cute. It's like Boku no Pico with the bizarre comedic value but it's actually trying to be funny most of the time, and to be fair they do succeed since it made me laugh a bunch of times. I feel bad for the main boy (Kuuro kun) in it because christ a lot of the shit looks like it hurts, especially in the motion comic jesus christ.

>>3994>>3995The Banana Fish manga has never been sold as BL in Japan, it's considered a thriller with gay relationships but has never been published under a BL imprint or labelled as such in stores.
We're going to go round and round in this loop forever. If we're gonna talk about Karaoke Iko and SK8 in this thread then we should forget about technical terms and just go by "literally who else is going to watch this other than fujos" tier anime.
No.3997

If we're gonna talk about Karaoke Iko and SK8 in this thread then we should forget about technical terms and just go by "literally who else is going to watch this other than fujos" tier anime.Eh. SK8 is popular with normies I think, it's a colorful anime with some homoeroticism by bones. The only explicit gayness is the villain.
Karaoke is straight up published in a magazine aimed at older men. It's dry comedy first, so enjoyable.
It's not like any of that shit features explicit gayness on screen.
No.4012
>>3996>The Banana Fish manga has never been sold as BL in JapanWho gives a shit? No.6 wasn't labelled as BL either despite it featuring a homo romance as its main plot.
At least choose a reasonable point of reference other than 'B-but Japan said!…' as if you were a Ken-sama weaboo in year 2004. Have some self-respect.
>>3997So is Yami no Matsuei, yet every source (MAL, ANN, AniDB) lables it as shounen-ai.
No.4013
>>4012i think the discourse around old works who are not labelled BL because came out in a time when commercial BL was very rare and not as popular as it's now a bit disingenuous.
I think was talking enough how shoujo/josei/seinen magazines released many classic of the genre but with the rise of commercial BL, that encompasses those demographics, in the process we got shorter stories and shoujo/josei/seinen magazines publish less works that fall on the BL spectrum and more BL-adjacent manga.

>>4015Are you just trolling or do you genuinely not see it as homoerotic? Pretty sure VIZ marketed it on gayness over here back in the day.
>>4013Yeah, I'm glad that there are specific magazines now just for BL but it's kind of cool to have older series like MW or Heart of Thomas which are aimed at wider audiences but also jave BL as a substantial part of the story.
No.4020
>>4019i think people have narrow view on what's BL because even know some people out there will discuss if X or Y is BL or not because "it's not about LOVE" when a lot of other genres will not have this kind of discussion when it's about a straight romance
No.4022
>>4019>>4020In my head there's a category for explicit BL and another one for BL-adjacent where BF, Free!, Hetalia, Tokyo Babylon / X, SK8, etc go kek
No.4023
>>4022We need to bring back talking about it in terms of "Shonen ai" and "yaoi" but even then I guess stuff like X is explicitly gay wheras Free or hetalia is just fujobait.
No.4024
>>4019>Are you just trolling or do you genuinely not see it as homoerotic? Pretty sure VIZ marketed it on gayness over here back in the day. What the fuck does homoeroticism have to do with gay romance? By that logic naruto is also one. The author of BF insist that ash isn't gay and the "romance" goes nowhere with one guy getting stabbed and dying like a bitch. Then she took the time to write a sequel so make sure we know Sing marries some jailbait.
And the second pic isn't even from the manga.
>>4022TB is the only one here with gay romance. Gaybait anime aren't bl.
No.4027
>>4023yaoi is a term that no longer exist and was only used around secondary works, not manga or serie like you mentioned and shounen ai is even more archaic than yaoi.
>>4022It depends by the circles but what you mentioned belong to joseimuke, which is a huge umbrella term because attract more female watchers and readers than male ones. Some works havve BL elements, because the cast is mostly male and focus on male/male relationships.
I think fujoshi, at least western ones, should stop focusing too much about labels and understanding what old works that in the past weren't BL are considered now stable in the genre.

>>4012What is a reasonable point of reference? "Some fans in the US said so"? Yami no Matsuei doesn't even have a gay relationship in it outside of the Catholic school teacher and students, one of the leads falls in love with a girl and gets cucked by a man who already has a fiancee. One of the Wikipedia talk points is someone insisting a character is gay because he talked about wavy hair types.
I'm just saying that before everyone keeps arguing back and forth what is and isn't BL while a bunch of shows get no questions at all, we should quiet it all and accept there's a range of shows everyone can assume to be fujo catering, labeled BL or not.
No.4148
>>4015It has gay pining. It was confirmed to be romantic love in the afterstory.
>>4035Not a 'relationship', but Muraki is gay for Tsuzuki and also raped Hisoka. It's more like a homosexual entanglement between those two and the antagonist. In my opinion, if Hannibal the TV series counts as BL, so should Yami no Matsuei.
