The third reason is because the ship is just so boring. Here we have stoic mercenary whose in-game supports are all tailored around the other person he interacts with (meaning his personality, while there, is limited. He does grow as a person though, even if it is semi-rushed and not done very properly or interestingly…but I blame that on the games needing to be better paced more fleshed out) and brooding, anti-social, 'mean because of my dark past but I'm actually a softie on the inside guiz!!111' kuudere-borderline-tsun type. Two characters with very little emotional depth makes for a very bland ship. (Mind you, the english translation of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn added a lot of 'spiciness' to the character's dialogue, so, in all actuality, they're both even more canonically boring than people perceived them as. A lot of the 'umph' and 'sass' came from localization changes) That's why all the fanart and fanfiction between these two is boring or outright OOC-like because it's just that lame. While I'm not much of a fan of Ike/Ranulf either, at least Ranulf's more laid-back, fun personality makes that ship more interesting. And you know what, I wouldn't even mind Ike/Soren being so boring if its fans didn't try to make everyone pretend that it's good and so heckin' wholesome. (A real one admits when their taste is bad but they like it anyway).

Everyone who glazes this ship just needs to admit that they like it solely because it has a sadboy twink uke with a sob-story past and a hot muscular cool and stoic guy from super smash brothers as the seme. P.S. MarthxIke was much more exciting, even if it was only because of the fans autism at the time.

Anyway, I'd write about more ships, but I think I've subjected you all to enough ranting. Glad I was able to get this out of my system.

See, I'm inclined to see where you are getting at though but the games don't handle it all that well. Soren doesn't accept other people's kindness, only Ike's, as if he were the only one able to show such a trait. Even when others try to warm up to him he acts like an ass. Again, to me this seems like a lackluster writing choice more than anything.

Me neither, well there's one crackship that I'm fond of but it's only because of an artist who drew nice art of it. For some reason, I feel that the Tellius games put less emphasis on the characters (at least when really delving into their personality) and more on the story, which is probably why I personally feel that way.

I feel the same way (Especially since Legault/Heath is way more interesting to me). A lot of Ike/Soren popularity has to do with Ike being probably the most popular character in the franchise along with Heroes introducing a new wave of fans into the greater Fire Emblem series. Because before, at least in the western side of the fandom, you'd see more Elincia/Ike and Marth/Ike.

I think this was because of ff.net's demographics at the time (mid/late 00s)–there were quite a lot of boys writing fanfics and ff.net got so many crossovers they eventually got their own section. Strange times looking back on it.

Good times in my opinion. The worst thing you had to deal with back then in fandoms was shippingwars and flamewars.

My NOTP is the most popular pairing on the western side and is basically considered canon (it's not) by it's annoying fans and other people who spend a lot of time in spaces with the annoying fans. My OTP doesn't exist on the western side.
I'm satisfied with all the amazing content Asian side of the fandom provides for my OTP but hate that no matter where and whenever I want to discuss the story, fans of the NOTP chime in and mention the NOTP even if it has nothing to do with the thing discussed, just to make it about the NOTP.
It drives me crazy and is probably the first time I encounter such a situation. Not going to mention the fandom for reasons, just needed to get it out of my system.
It's sad that I wouldn't hate the NOTP half as much if the fans just behaved like normal human beings.

It's very frustrating at times because people will try to act like their ship is objectively correct, or in my ship's case, try to attach some moral quality to it to make it seem "better." I have noticed most fanart of every notp i have is eerily similiar.
They all have this yumecoded het fanart where the girl is drawn as cute and bubbly, while the guy just blushes at her like he’s overwhelmed by how adorable she is, or fanarts where he hugs her to show how possessive he is of her. It's literally the same fanarts types for all straight ships lol
There’s barely any creativity, and the characters’ real personalities get watered down for mass appeal.

I guess what frustrates me the most is knowing that a lot of people aren’t engaging with the characters for who they actually are, but instead using them as wish fulfillment stand ins.

Obi-Wan and Anakin. its incredibly oversaturated, seems to be mostly TCW-based and it seems to basically just exist as an avenue for people to lust over Obi-Wan Kenobi, whom I've never liked or particularly cared about.

I just genuinely do not understand how anybody could find it to be remotely canon. they dont even seem to really like each-other, at least not in the movies. (i am not going to watch a 166 episode CGI cartoon, are the rest of these people completley fucking insane.)

I think it's a combo of the older fandom reading the novels, the newer fandom watching clone wars (which, imo, has more tension between Obi-wan and Maul than anything else), and Anakin and Obi-wan being the 'safest' option. They're both attractive human men, so no weirdness with aliens, and by the time of the Clone Wars, there's no issue with them being master-apprentice, so no fraternization issue like with the clones. Its an interesting case of 'pair the spares', except it's the main ship.

A bit contrary to the thread but I'm so desperate to see a character bottom I'm reading doujin of my NOTP for it. I'm basically 1 of the 10 fans in the entire world who likes the "reversed" position of my OTP whereas in my NOTP that character being the bottom is the majority preference. I'm enjoying <10% of the experience so I'm subjecting myself to this for no good reason. Don't think I can stomach fanfic for it and won't even bother. Life is suffering…

I'm gonna be honest here: I have a NOTP for most fandoms I enter because I get too annoyingly invested in shipping. I could probably sit here and list over 20+ ships that still make me seethe to this day, which is why it's a good thing I don't really post on social media. It sucks that many are popular ships so I just stop interacting with those fandoms because they are inescapable. If I were to analyze myself it would always be Character B getting shipped with others but idc about Character A's ships weirdly. It's weird because Character B tends to be the one I like least but I also get more annoyed at seeing people ship him with the "wrong" dude. Going even deeper, it may be that Character A is usually the less liked one in the fandom and his personality usually gets flattened into being a complete simp with no other character traits for B. Also, the Character B Stan's are obnoxious and use him as a self-insert / do a Character B-bowl and write everyone OOC. idk.

Personally I liked Geto a lot because of nostalgia. He reminded me of several characters from way older manga and anime I was into long ago and Gege himself said he was very inspired by one of the antagonists in Yu Yu Hakusho which was really obvious. I don't know about zoomers, but I assume that's the appeal for other fans around Gege's and my age.

It's Naruto if Naruto knew when to end but had less good art. If JJK was published back when I was a teenager instead of Naruto I would have been more invested because at some point I stopped caring about Naruto. It was going nowhere. I stopped reading a little before or after the Pain arc ended because at that point I was too lazy to check new chapters online. At least zoomers who grew up reading JJK while it was ongoing can easily move on now if they were disappointed with its ending and don't have to deal with 100 shitty filler episodes between the manga is adapted into more episodes if they liked the whole series. In 10 or 15 years we will have another popular WSJ manga that will be mocked as being JJK for alpha gen kek.

I've never liked tall rapist male x small submissive bottom ships in my life, even before they got hit by automatic womanfication. I think I have a natural repulsion towards ships like that, even if they are the "BL standard".
At the risk of getting myself accidentally exposed a second time now, because somehow everything I do leads to me getting stalked by a bunch of people who can't stand anyone disliking the things they like, it's the ship from Metaphor of the Protagonist and this guy.
Everyone wants to get fucked by the blonde guy, he's the only guy worth a shit in the whole game. People's severity of wanting to see him fuck is so much so that most of the fics of him are all shitty porn with either reader insert, some shitty femc, or "totally not self-inserting into the protag" garbage.
Even as someone who has shipped many Atlus ships in the past, and knows how prevalent Character x MC ships are no matter what, this is the blandest fucking 'dynamic' Atlus has concocted in a very long while. People's interpretation of the ship is as if they're totally rivals, seeking some cat and mouse chase with each other, predator and prey, but canonically there's fucking NOTHING between them, people WISH it had something (again, due to their thirst over the blonde guy) but ultimately it is bland as fuck. These two characters never even speak to the other alone together in any way either.
It would be one thing if it simply was a ship I disliked, like the anon who dislikes chrollopika above (even if not as popular, at least Kurapika has options and so does Chrollo), but this is pretty much the ONLY ship this guy ever gets, and again, it's all just making the MC a girl or a poon (because the failed yumes can't help themselves into being desired by Tall Male).
A character's individuality be damned if all that they ever want is porn. They'll justify themselves that the porn is the LORE, the porn is the PLOT, they'll throw a thesaurus'd essay to pretend they truly know the characters all while they still keep jacking off to 'dick lobotomy' fantasies.
Doesn't help that pretty much every person that knows or sees things about the game will inevitably only know this piece of garbage as the only ship possible for the blonde guy, despite having other options. But even for the other options, it suffers from womanfication too so there's no winning.

In imaginary vibes-wise, the ship i'm sperging about is kind of similar? A supposed 'hate' rivalry between the other, a tension between enemies… but there's none of this, at all. The MC is the blandest motherfucker ever, with absolutely no interesting traits whatsoever even compared to the most boring Persona/SMT MCs. Why do you think you don't see him plastered everywhere unlike other Atlus MCs? Because he is dogshit, both in appearance and personality. A bad spewed and shat out rendition of the much cuter P3MC. Even Nahobino has more to it than this ugly void of a faggot. There's no true feelings of hatred, there are not even feelings of 'understanding' or regret towards the villain either, there is NOTHING. It's pure generic "hero slaying evil" shit.
Spoilers but: The MC's goals are initially those that he must save his best friend "the Prince" who fell into a curse that was (supposedly) cast by blonde guy. He has to kill blonde guy in order for the curse to be undone and then the Prince will save the country yadda yadda. As the plot progresses, it turns out that blonde guy didn't even do shit regarding that anyway. He never cursed the Prince, it was someone else. So there isn't even a real feeling of 'avenging' his friend anymore, there is no goal. And on top of that, it also turns out that the Prince is just the MC, the MC is a tulpa the Prince made. So again, nothing really connects these two characters truly as a hero-villian pair beyond simply being the game's titular hero and villian. It's like pairing them for the sake of needing a ship, rather than that ship having any substance to it at all.

Anyway, for any nonna that still hasn't tried the game or doesn't know or has surface knowledge of it, don't fall for the propaganda because this ship is shit and so are the fans. It doesn't even have good art or fics or anything, not even doujins, so there's nothing of value to it. Sometimes people get swayed by good looking art of a ship even if they don't ship/know about it, but this doesn't even have that. It's all a bunch of westerner's ugly chickenscratch scribbles or poon porn.

This is probably a large contributing factor to how pervasive it is today, but it was becoming a problem before that, too. I abandoned the DBH fandom due to the amount of PiV shit I kept seeing. And okay, they're fucking robots, sure, but why all the focus on "t-dicks?" Why would a robot be trans if they're just swappable parts?

What's ironic with Atlus is that one of the few canon gay pairing possible comes from Catherine Fullbody. And the original Catherine was the straightest video game on earth. NTA and I'm probably wrong but, Ren and Akechi are fundamentally based on the trope of "Phantom Thief vs Detective", although Akechi does initially have that 'pursuit' desire towards unmasking and finding the PT, eventually as they become equals this kind of dynamic ends up being underutilized and it ends up being completely different by the point Akechi joins. There isn't that feeling of an eternal chase that a PT vs Detective has. And considering Akechi isn't even really a detective in the first place, it basically disappears as it gets revealed it was all a lie. Even more so in Royal, though Ren is the one 'chasing' Akechi this time, it's less of a cat and mouse chase and more so the "I can save him" type of dynamic.
