I feel like besides what OP mentioned I haven't seen proper ship wars for gay pairings in such a long time I can't recall any of them. I could easily tell you about the shit I've seen for straight pairings though despite not even caring about fans of said pairings and avoiding them online as much as possible.
>>120>>122I remember when that cursed series got very popular with underaged fujo on tumblr. At the very beginning one of my best friends loved it and shipped Klance because she thought it had potential to be cute. Then the ship wars that happened once it got more seasons ruined the entire series for her so she stopped watching it after season 3 or 4 I think? I got curious later and thought it was kind of boring but I think it's just because I'm not part of the target audience and don't have the patience for anime and cartoons anymore anyway.
We both had a good laugh when we heard about how the last episode went and how everyone reacted to it though.

Is it just me or do old-fashioned ship wars not even happen anymore? Unless I'm out of the loop, the last significant one I can think of was Sheith vs Klance and even that was a while ago now.
Would you say current fandom flamewars more focused on shipping morality in general, e.g. antis vs proshippers/anti-antis?

drama, but i don't usually see ship
wars. there's a lot of small-scale drama in the haikyuu fandom, for example, and certain ships have it out for other ships, but none of it ever blows up significantly. it's just a bunch of people subtweeting each other over things like someone writing a cute moment between one ship to be for another ship, for example.
there's a little more drama in eastern fandoms, but nowadays i'd agree the real cultural schism is antis vs. proshippers.

I've never been deeply involved in the hero academia fanbase but from my surface level understanding of what gay ships there are it wouldn't surprise me if there's been arguments between Bakudeku and Kiribaku shippers on whether Bakudeku is abusive and therefore Kiribaku is the superior ship.

Both ships got torpedo'd and it sounds like even the people who were just invested in the main plot got screwed over.
Come to think of it I guess that also happened with BBC sherlock and supernatural.

On a personal level I follow an artist who draws for that fandom who got death threats for drawing NTR art
No.626
>>622I also noticed this in recent years with JJBA fujos arguing to the death over Kakyoin, it's just retarded. Everyone has different preferences, who cares. Some try to make it about "accurate characterization" as if there's some kind of sex horoscope lol cmon. Whoever can do whatever. Or they pretend that making the bigger guy bottom is a subversive political statement instead of just a tag on your gay little fanfic.
No.627
>>622In what way do you mean it? I've seen several kinds of top/bottom discourse lately.
One is the typical anti-fujo sentiment. "Real gay people switch!/Real gay people aren't like that! Assigning top/bottom roles is fetishization! It shouldn't matter who tops or bottoms, you like the ship and that's it! etc."
On the other hand, I think I did quite unironically see a genshin artist say something that was "I saw Aether/Xiao and got so triggered I started crying. PLEASE tag reverse ships." (they're xiaoether) which was really fucking funny. Kaeluc artists are also like this too, way much worse actually.
In general, I think it's a thing of preference. Unfortunately, fanarts and fics and everything inbetween aren't perfect. There's too much pseudo selfinsertion in shipping and feminization of the bottom to reflect on that selfinserty feel.
To avoid seeing the character you like be an uwu blushy big eyed kawaii abomination (or worse, a tranny), you pretty much have to stablish which character do you prefer to see better as top or bottom.
It depends on the franchise too. It's a pretty fucking autistic endeavor but I honestly kinda get it.
This anon brought up the Kak example
>>626 so I guess I'll go with it.
Kakyoin is specially the kind of character that goes through so much fujo flanderization it's not even funny. He'll be a softboi whether you like it or not, even if he isn't like that. Of course though, you're not better for making Jotaro bottom either or by making Kak into a top. But it just so happens that the majority of his content is this way that you just have to go through hoops to avoid it.
Kinda like with people who would want top Deku in Bakudeku, which in this case would be Dekubaku (is that even a thing though?). The dynamics simply change.
Some people also DO want that content though, some people obviously want the effeminate looking guy to bottom and that's fine. And that's why it's also necessary to tag it if needed. I think during promare some people tried to make "noo you have to make lio into a top because something something genderization" or whatever, when some people just simply wanted to see that twink fucked. Different dynamics, tastes, etc.
tldr; autism.

>>627>To avoid seeing the character you like be an uwu blushy big eyed kawaii abomination (or worse, a tranny), you pretty much have to stablish which character do you prefer to see better as top or bottom. This is pretty much it. I actually don't mind the idea of my OTP switching in bed at all, might be interesting even, the problem is whoever is bottoming will be depicted as a fragile crying uke and that's what fucking triggers me, so you end up having to establish a preference in the relationship dynamics that basically comes down to choosing who you think is the manlier character. Of course a specific character being always depicted as the typical bottom can be pretty hot sometimes, but I think that's more the exception to the rule. Overally I think the issue is making bottoms feel like little girls. If the bottoms were still in character or were allowed some masculinity despite the fact they're taking a dick in the ass few people would get so worked up over top/bottom roles.
No.689
>>627>>676The archetypical example people always give when discussing how fujoshi tend to flanderize characters is how effeminate the uke is inclined to be portrayed, but personally that's never been my point of contention.
I've always hated how some people will portray the seme as a heartless rapist. An orc, if you will.
With fujoshi, people usually (not always, but usually) will put their favorite character on the bottom.
Meaning the character they portray as the seme tends to get the shaft.
In Japanese, they call this the 棒化 of the seme, literally rodification, which is to say they're portrayed as a walking dildo and not much else. This is frowned upon, but of course some people characterize the seme like this anyway.
I can't stand to see my favorite characters portrayed as cold, emotionless mob-ojisan rapists, so if I notice that being a trend in fanworks I'll gravitate towards fanworks where they're the uke - and well, if they're portrayed as a crybaby bitch in some of those works, to me that's still the lesser of two evils.
No.690
>>676Even after decades as a fujo I still don't understand why that's pretty much guaranteed to happen no matter what. Like even if the character in the uke role should be pulling the strings and power bottoming it's pretty much guaranteed he'll be turned into a delicate melodramatic shojo girl instead at least 75% of the time. I find this particularly cursed with a pairing I'm into these days because literally the only reason the character that usually gets the uke role is assigned to it is because he's short and that's it, personality and dynamic wise he's the dominant one in the source material, so it's cringe when he's turned into a "little girl" as you put it, might as well be OCs at that point.
It doesn't even feel like it's done for fetish purposes either. It's almost like they just can't comprehend the idea of the "receiver" enjoying or taking a proactive role during sex. Maybe it comes out of ignorance due to their own fucked up relation with sexuality and then projecting that onto men taking dick but that's just armchair psychology.
>>689>I've always hated how some people will portray the seme as a heartless rapist. An orc, if you will.I hate this too especially when the source material has shown them to do things like get extremely shaken when the other character gets hurt or whatever.
No.691
>>689>>690It definitely feels like there's a stronger tendency of the author turning their favorite character into their self insert.
Maybe this is me being old but it's like fandom no longer cares about Mary Sues and OOC, which means there's more fic that functions as the author's therapy sessions. I just want to see my two fave guys together, not read about proxy struggles with mental health/trauma/transness etc. And than it turns into ship wars when they see a different take on the characters as a personal attack.
No.692
>>689I never cared about this or even thought about this until recently, but lately I've been enjoying (in my imagination since it's pretty much non-existant in mainstream works) the seme making more moaning noises and showing that they're feeling as good in sex as the uke. Usually the uke is shown making the most noise and having all the fun while the seme has a stone cold emotionless face on. I'd love to see more works where the seme gets so into it that he could almost be mistaken for the bottom with how much he's feeling good.

There are some people who do take it way to seriously though which is super annoying, but ship wars can lead to some great trolling.
