The best analogy I can give you is that Genshin is like Homestuck (or any ensemble cast of your choosing, like MHA or FFXIV) where there is a flavor for everybody and the cast is deep enough to get a read on their character but shallow enough to project onto/fill in the blanks/use as a doll to kiss other dolls.
Every playable character comes with a decent amount of background information (
https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Diluc/Lore) and will occasionally reappear in limited time events with other characters, which is almost always connected to a surge in ship content. To get attached to a character requires more "homework" than just playing the game and I think that's where a lot of people get confused if they just try it out for a few hours after wondering why it's so popular.
