>>3875I deeply agree with this. I'd go so far as to say that Silver perfected this formula, as he was given an entire character arc.
Sword & Shield almost got us to this with Bede, but he was drowned out by the annoying-ass amount of other characters. I've had it with supportive bro-type characters, I do not like them. They are boring and there's nothing compelling about them, especially when the game touts them as 'your destined rival'.
Ash/Gary definitely counts to some extent, I'd say. At least in Pokemon Yellow.
No.3882
>>3876SWSH was frustrating because Hop feels more like a rival for his brother not the player. He'd work better as a side character not the main rival. The Bianca not the Cheren if that makes sense.
Silver is great! Though since he hasn't come back in later entries he doesn't have the same development Blue has. It would be cool if for Z-A we get some returning characters who aren't from XY.
No.3885
>>3882Bianca is underrated as a rival, I like her more than Tcheren. Hop can only dream of being likable like her. Hau was also Hop but better already.

>>3888What did you think of Avery?
Bede is definitely the better rival in SWSH and the fact that they took the angry bastard and offset him with being a Fairy-type trainer is funny.
No.3891
>>3889I’ve never played the dlc so I don’t know about Avery. I agree that I love the contrast between Bede’s personality and his pokemon type. I will say his fairy typing definitely contributed to my enjoyment of him being a rival because I tend to play with mostly fairy type pokemon (and before fairy was introduced I was a psychic type player) so him stealing my character’s thunder and the fairy type gym made me view him as even more of a proper rival than Hop.
>>3890Yeah the only time I remember Marnie is when I’m reminded of Team Yell. She’s probably the most forgettable rival in SWSH. I honestly wonder if Gamefreak had more planned for her and Team Yell because even her rival battles weren’t interesting. I think I remember reading somewhere about the game being rushed after a certain part where it’s obvious they didn’t have as much time to flesh certain things out.
No.3898
>>3894He deserves to be bullied and has a face made to be bruised, but given he's a single game character it makes sense. Honestly the fact that SWSH had game-exclusive trainers was a terrible idea and I long for the day they publish a single game for a gen. I feel the legends games are moving us there.

>>4265>it's seriously making me want to replay BW just to see them againI was also inspired to boot up my copy of BW to finally play the Battle Subway, because kid!me gave up weirdly quick back in the day despite playing the Sinnoh Battle Tower and Battle Frontier a ton. (The fast HP bars in Gen 5 have made it so hard for me to go back to Gen 4 Frontier now…)
>Do you guys think we'll get more of them in Pokemon Legends ZA?It would be weird if they didn't because they know people are expecting it and will buy the game just for them, but GF is never predictable. They're not immune to fan pressure though, since they never intended to show N again, but he ended up reappearing in BW2. I was genuinely expecting ZA to be in either the past or future but not the present, because it seemed like it would make sense for them to get transported at the same time to different eras, so now I'm really wondering what direction the plot will go.
Right now, it looks like everyone is expecting Emmet to be in the tournament to reach A rank and get a wish. But since they've chosen a present day setting, will he be retired? Will people know who he is? Or, if he warped 12 years, will he be hiding his identity? Will he have amnesia too? Goddamnit, there's too many questions.
>I want Ingo and Emmet to be together again.Me too, nonna… I hope everything will be resolved well, even just the bare minimum would be good. I'm stupidly worried about it, lol. I mean, you never know what could happen, they could kill the fandom if they're not careful.
I can't stop thinking about what kind of redesign Emmet will get either. Will he be bald too…

>>4266Pfft. In one fandom I'm in it's common to use a little shooting star like the one behind Cyrus's head to indicate someone is having lewd thoughts. If you see poipiku reactions spamming the shooting star emoji that's what it means.

>>4398What did you think about his/Team Galactic's backstory in the teraleak, nona? It's pretty fascinating to find out how in-depth they go with the character planning and how little of that ended up in the final product.
No.4403
>>4399>What did you think about his/Team Galactic's backstory in the teraleak, nona?I might be coming at this from a different perspective than many people, as I didn't hate Cyrus in DPPt, and I always felt like his motives made SOME degree of sense. I saw a video of some scrote ranting about how the Teraleak 'fixed' Cyrus, and he acted like the thing with his parents was completely new information. I think it was a reasonable inference even before the leak. I think that he misunderstands the appeal of Cyrus's character (and Team Galactic as whole), as part of their appeal is how crazy their plan is. I just find them so charming, much in the same way a lot of people find Archie and Maxie charming. There's something so fun about a bad guy gang with such lofty aspirations that are also completely batshit crazy in terms of what they're hoping to accomplish.
Anyways, I liked the elaboration on his parents quite a bit. I remember there was an NPC in Sunyshore City who alludes to him having a rough-ish childhood, which may have contributed to why he ended up like that, but it is nice to know there was even more thought put into his backstory. It was also cool to see the plans for his childhood, although I actually think a lot about Cyrus could be inferred from the (admittedly sparse) information we're given in-game. It was pretty similar to how I'd interpreted/imagined the character, and I would've loved to see more of all that hard work they put into planning in the game proper. I don't know quite how to feel about the initial draft/plan for his ending with the locket. I like what Platinum ended up doing with his ending, as it felt kind of fitting (Diamond and Pearl less so), but the older draft sounded really cool conceptually and I don't think I would've hated it.
It was also funny to see that Saturn was intended/planned to be 25 years old because there were a lot of people in the fandom who would get angry at people who would ship him with Cyrus because they thought Saturn was underage or "child-coded" or whatever. I remember some people arguing he was probably 15-ish kek.Sorry for the long, rambling post! It's nice to see the amount of thought they put into the characters even though, like you said, very little of it ends up in the final product.

>>4417I'm stuck in a gym with an irl and it's literally just us two doing dailies so we only ever make the B rank prize. ;__;
I didn't think too hard about it when he asked me to join him, and then when checking a random Japanese user who joined us I realized he could see my photo card was Nanu smirking under a rainbow in the club with two Guzma. I've noticed there's a ton of male users who put boy protags with Cynthia and stuff like that so maybe fujo photos aren't that surprising.
No.4436
>>4423>maybe fujo photos aren't that surprising. They're super common, you can search just about any two popular fujo ship characters and find some. Sometimes people get reported and their photos are wiped, but it's never happened to me and I've done some pretty un-kid friendly ones. Just for fun, I usually save most BL and yuri ship photos that I come across (if they're not NOTPs, anyway)
>Nanu smirking under a rainbow in the club with two GuzmaAbsolutely based ship nonna, I love it too (Am also a Nanu/Grimsley shipper thanks to the story mode)
No.4439
>>4437I get it. From what I've experienced it feels like a pretty common opinion that the 2D sprites had a charm that the 3D models don't replicate, like how Gen 4 Rayquaza has a devious-looking backsprite and gen 2 and 3 Kanga holds her baby in her backsprite.
No.4440
>>4437>>4439Yeah, this is definitely a pretty common sentiment, and I also felt this way since the jump to full 3D in XY. But I've always been a pixelartfag, so I'm biased. When they finally got rid of the last bit of pixel art in the games - the pokemon icon sprites - and replaced them with those ugly vector traces, a part of me definitely died. (I know this technically happened all the way back in Colosseum, but even the Colosseum, PLA and Battle Revolution icons looked better than what we have now.)
>they're all either too edgy, coomer, or deviate too far from the series to where it no longer feels like PokemonYeah, I feel this too. That's why I'm still chugging along on my own shit, with blackjack, hookers and cute boys, etc.
No.4509
>>4507That's definitely a big part of it, but rival/MC has been a tradition since Gen 1 and N happened to be a rival with the most ties to the MC, plus N himself being a hot older bishie instead of a dorky kid.
N and the MC are set up as sort of destined rivals with parallels to the twin heroes and the scale is much bigger, all flaws with BW's writing aside. Then at the end, N leaves and the MC chases after him, and it's left open ended. The ending is what stuck with baby fujo me and I would always imagine their reunion.
All rivals since N have stayed on the more classic/mundane side and only Kieran has really come close to the same level as N recently. Volo kind of filled that niche too but most of his content is het sadly.
No.4513
>>4512N was always pretty special, because of the way he's symbolically set up as an opposing force to the player and combined with the role of evil team leader (until the Dennis 'reveal', anyway). So he's pretty much the most important character in the game compared to a usual rival who's secondary.
Since gen 5 they kept repeating the May/Brendan formula of friendly character whose dreams get crushed by your OP-ness but they learn to live with it, with Kieran being the most recent one. Lillie was pretty much N as a waifu but without being a rival or evil team leader, which is why people criticize Gen 7 as a guided tour kek (I still haven't played it myself)
Arven and Nemona were very likable imo and have been well received by most people. Kieran feels like they brought back the old formula but make him go batshit this time like they want to subvert the trope except it ends with him acting mindbroken back into friendship by your OP-ness anyway, so I don't know what happened there. He seemed like a big mess of wasted potential with the way everyone was speculating the evil peach legendary was mind-controlling him only for it to turn out to be a big red herring. I wonder if there were some last-minute rewrites from GF. It's super weird. But N himself has plenty of mysteries like the rubiks cube that was supposed to be plot-important and his planned psychic abilities.
No.4544
>>4539My impression of XY is that it wasn't received all that well since it was the awkward first step into perma 3D and the story wasn't great either(I genuinely don't remember what Lysandre was even trying to accomplish) so I can see that contributing to low hype. I did really like the fashion aspect of XY so I hope we'll get some nice clothing options and I'm happy that I'll get to use mega Absol again cause Absol is my favourite pokemon.
No.4547
>>4544>I genuinely don't remember what Lysandre was even trying to accomplishThe only thing I remember about Lysandre is he and the professor were fucking. XY brought many things to the series like amie, but the story is forgettable.
>I'm happy that I'll get to use mega Absol again cause Absol is my favourite pokemonGood pick! Honestly at this point I mainly just follow pokemon to see the new characters and Pokemon so I'm hoping some old favorites get megas.
No.4551
>>4544I "liked" Gen 6 but am still assblasted there was no Z version. XY felt like the framework of a good game, which is pretty much how all mainline pokemon games feel to me now. BW2 was the last solid one if we are speaking from an in/end-game content perspective.
>>4547Get that ugly bastard away from the professor reeeeeeeeee
No.4553
>>4551>Get that ugly bastard away from the professor reeeeeeeeeeHaha I was never big into it either, I think they canonically used to be friends but I don't recall all the details since it didn't personally resonate with me. Besides them tnough I don't recall there being a big shipping scene for XY at all, I think BW ships continued to dominate.
No.4555
>>4553From what I remember outside of Lysandre/Sycamore there was Shauna/Serena and Sycamore/Serena. I'm still kind of bootybothered Calem got next to zero content with Sycamore, complete waste of a cute male protag design.
>BW shipsI'm hoping they've been so quiet about the gen 5 remake because they are actually going to make it good. /copium
No.4559
I’ve honestly been hoping that if they do a BW remake, they’ll make it like yokai watch 3 with the dual protagonist system so it can be a BW1 and BW2 remake, but this is Gamefreak and they prefer to milk their fans so they’ll probably make 1 and 2 remakes separate if they even remake 2.
No.4567
>>4566I definitely feel like poison guy is going to be endearing to me. Someone pointed out to me that he has a mega accessory which I initially didn't notice so if Arbok is indeed his ace it implies we're getting mega Arbok which is an interesting choice. Also I'm already vibrating from excitement over the dressup mechanics.
No.4568
>>4567I hope so, cool ace and I love how "goopy" his clothes are, probably the best design they've released.
Someone pointed out to me that since Mable is being repurposed as a professor and Sycamore is nowhere to be seen (Mable is in his office in the trailer) he must have a new role in the game wonder what he's up to? Looker's office has also been shown a few times but he is similarly absent from any promo material.

>>4566Loving the Korean response to this guy. One user said that in Pokemon world logic he's more likely to be a bad person if he smiles too much, so he's probably an ally. Others are pointing out how short he is and basically calling him "ugly manlet nerd" with affection.
The fujos are asking what happened to Sycamore though and asking if he got tied up and kidnapped again.
