I'm pretty convinced that Kevin would have been gay if the manga wasn't aimed at older men, the dude knew his coach for a span of 3 or so months and became so emotionally attached to him that the coach's broken mask becomes Kevin's most prized possession after he leaves.

Mind you, Kevin is such a lone wolf that hates being told what to do that he ran away from home when he was a kid, and yet decided to allow a total stranger to coach him and essentially be joined to him at the hip because ????. Not to mention that the anime decided to adapt their scenes together by making the camera lingering between them.
