Gonna have to break this posts into parts because fujochan couldn't take my great autism.
Tony Stark x Gene Khan from Ironman: Armoured adventures. Despite the show title it isn't as kiddy or childish as it seems and did surprise me a lot with some of the writing choices. It was very fun.
That aside, this ship has me by the ovaries. The Tony Stark of this alternative take is a 16 yo teenage boy who isn't an asshole or annoying or anything, he's just a normal dorky nerdy kid who's a genius, homeschooled, and rich. His dad dies in their private airplane crash and Tony survived using his iron man armored but got a heart injury yada yada yada. He has to go to highschool now and he lives with Rhody and Rhody's mom is his legal guardian. At school he meets Pepper Pots and they don't start dating until the literal last episode. Before that he has a slight better romance plot with and girl but she becomes "evil" so they can write her out of the story so Tony and Pepper can be a think.
Gene is the step-son of the chinese mafa overlord and is looking for the makluan rings and he ambushed his step-dad to get his rings then becomes the mandarin and looks for the rest of the rings. He meets Tony in the money laundering shop his step-dad owns that sells ancient chinese artifacts, and Tony asks him about the rings, which gets Gene interested in Tony and he ends up enrolling in the same highschool as him.
They hit it off immediately because they have some things in common, both lost their moms when they were young kids, are rich, have the responsibility of huge companies to be inherited from their fathers, and are kinda nerdy and are interested in the rings. So ofcourse they go on a private jet to get one of these rings together, alone, without the remaining friends of Tony's that he usually takes with him. Picrel is from that trip. And they had a great time together, and once Tony is back he gets scolded by a jealous Pepper and Rhody kek.
Their relationship keeps getting more developed by the end of s1, because Gene is lonely, has no friends, no real family, and grew up around organized crimes and criminals and was sort of abused by his step-dad. So he's THIRSTY for being treated kindly for once for a change.

Ofcourse stuff like that can happen with friends but I find it hilarious.
Then it all came trembling down by the end of s1 when Tony revealed he's iron man to Gene in a life or death situation to save him, but Gene revealed he was the mandarin all along, and they had a giant fight. Then Gene revealed he bombed the plane that day and that he's keeping Tony's dad hostage to use him for his search for the rings, and didn't know Tony survived. Now this is awkward af because they became friends and got close and Gene genuinely got attached to Tony, but he's the one behind all the bad stuff in Tony's life as well.
Tony lets him go because he wants to see his dad again, and Gene IMMEDIATELY regrets all the things he did and wishes he didn't do any of it, because being with Tony made him happy and was more important than fulfilling his destiny as the mandarin or reviving his dead mother. Until he discovered there are more rings to collect than he thought, so he distracts himself with that instead.
Tony got so upset about this whole thing he actually physically locked himself up in his lab and barely ate or went to school, because he was hurt so badly by what I like to call the divorce. He became so hostile and mean spirited that he refused to help a guy who asked him for help due to a misunderstanding, that Pepper and Rhody had to force him to get back on his feet. He eventually moves on and decides that he hates Gene's guts but will try his best to continue being Ironman and save his dad one day.
Then Dr. Doom gets involved in all of this for some reason, with a back story where he accidentally killed his mom and gf when doing an experiment, and is trying to access all forms of magic and technology to bring them back, so ofcourse he has one of the rings Gene is after. And he goes and asks Tony for help in exchange of giving him back his dad. The balls on this kid, man. They defeat Dr. Doom and make him get eaten by a demon because ofcourse, and Gene lets Tony take his dad with him and says "do you still think I'm a monster?", bro is down bad, he wants this guy's approval so bad and cares what he thinks of him and wants to be back with him, I can't take it, it's too good.

And Gene is apparently like 1% alien which is why he can use the rings, and that could explain why he's kinda shredded and good at martial arts. He and Tony work together along with other people to save the earth, and it was Tony's 18th birthday that day so Gene joked "you can't say I didn't get you something for your birthday", fucking kek. After the fight is over, Tony was looking for Gene to talk to him to just come back and be a good guy, but Gene has ran away already talking to himself about how he should be a hero just like Tony. And man, I'm dying at how bittersweet this is. He really got inspired by him and is centering his whole existence around him at this point. Makes sense because he genuinely has no one else, so he's sort of obsessed with and codependent on him, but maybe that's why he thought leaving is a better idea. His step-dad died at some point and if I'm not mistaken he's 17 so he's officially an orphaned minor, though he has all the inheritance from his step-dad that he was secretly operating this whole time anyways. But it's really sad how he was so alone and his love for Tony is the only thing that made him happy, but he had to give that up so Tony x Pepper becomes canon lol.
The potential of this to be a great gay romance was wasted, but it was 2009 so it's understandable. And even though Tony and his dad forgave Gene for everything he did, and Tony got some superpower that healed his heart condition, it's still kinda awkward to date someone who did all of that to him kek.
The parallels between them and the drama of their relationship is so good. Though I wish it was more fleshed out and that we got some follow up about it in their future. I made a little continuation inside my head where they're adults and CEOs of their own companies, and Gene needs some super advanced tech for some work he's doing that only Tony has, so he decides to take it as a chance to talk to him again after all those years and apologize to him properly after finally realizing and understanding the extent of his mistakes. And Tony is hesitant at first because he didn't like how Gene ditched him so suddenly, but eventually warms up to him because they're just too attracted to each other to care. Then he breaks up with Pepper who he didn't have a good relationship with to begin with (canonically she was possessive and too jealous before they even started dating, she'd probably be a pain in an actual relationship), and he starts dating Gene whom he's truly happy with.
I know this is a very long post and I'm sorry for anyone who read all of this, but also thank you for reading this far.

And in 90% of the time it was Tony passing the tests while Gene took the credit and the rings kek. But Gene respected and at the same time envied Tony's worthiness of the rings and was kinda impressed by it. I like this little fact about them because it gives "self-loathing loser who's in love with the person he wishes he was like". And it can lead to "I don't deserve you" kind of angst and comfort conversations and I'm a sucker for that shit.
