 No.2646

I don't know if it would be weird to have a thread for a sole mangaka, but with how popular Harada is and how many fujosisters mention her as one of their favourites I think it would be nice to have a thread to discuss her series. Harada (はらだ) is a Japanese BL manga artist who first grew popular through her Gintama doujinshi and her circle called Paraiso, and later on became known for using a lot of dark humor mixed with dark themes in her works such as Color Recipe, Nii-chan, Yata & Momo, Happy Kuso Life, the Song of Yoru&Asa, One Room Angel and many more.

>How did you hear about Harada?

>What was your first manga you read from her?
>What's your favourite manga from her?
>Who's your favourite couple from her mangas?
>How about least favourite?
>What do you like best about her works? Do you think there's something to improve?
>What was your favourite character moment?
>Have you read any anthologies she took part in?
>Do you own any merch?

>Are you familiar with her older works?
>Are you going to watch the One Room Angel live action?

>How did you hear about Harada?
Hiro Shimono was in Yatamomo's drama CD and I was listening to BL drama CDs with his voice in it
>Who's your favourite couple from her mangas?
Still Yata chan and Momota hahaha
>How about least favourite?
Yoru and Asaichi. Asa's just a shithead that I didn't like in general and Yoru enables him all the time.
>What do you like best about her works?
The way she creates tension in her more horror themed works is amazing, most actual horror manga can't even compare honestly. Also her tear jerking stuff is great
>Do you think there's something to improve?
Although I love her art I wish there was a bit more variety in character designs, it's hard to tell them apart sometimes!
>Have you read any anthologies she took part in?
A few! The one with the love triangle where the protagonist was the third wheel girl was cute, but I did feel bad for her.
>Do you own any merch?
Sadly no…
>Are you familiar with her older works?
I checked out some of her Gintama doujins, but I've never read Gintama so I didn't get much from it.
>Are you going to watch the One Room Angel live action?
It's already out and I watched some of it, but not much. I love one room angel but the acting is pretty off…

>How did you hear about Harada?
Found her work randomly on a manga site.

>What was your first manga you read from her?

That train chikan oneshot that's part of Yajirushi.

>What's your favourite manga from her?

One Room Angel!

>What do you like best about her works? Do you think there's something to improve?

The way she draws hair is really beautiful and I love her paneling. I don't think there's really anything to improve. She's an amazing artist and writer, but personally her characters are too whorish for my taste.

>What was your favourite character moment?

Asaichi getting raped, he deserved it.

>Are you going to watch the One Room Angel live action?

I know they can't cast an actual 14 year old, but the guy playing Angel just isn't cute enough, so no.

>How did you hear about Harada?

I was looking for 'straight boy gets penetrated' manga and 'Happy Shitty Life' was on the list.

>What was your first manga you read from her?

See above.

>What's your favourite manga from her?

Still, 'Happy Shitty Life' because it's extremely well-drawn, the couple is versatile and both exemplify attractive uke traits, which are well-needed in a vers pairing IMO. Also, the whole 'we are normally straight' thing is a huge draw. They also feel very much like real-life guys.

>Who's your favourite couple from her mangas?

See above. Pretty, petty high-class office workers being made to take cock is a nice one, so is cute scrappy countryside orphan who can be a real ass, in more ways than one.

I also like the guys from Nii-san, which was fucked up, deeply so and I wasn't a huge fan of the story, but 'molested older guy forced to admit vulnerability' got to me hard. I especially love that they eventually go versatile.

>How about least favourite?

N/A, I can't think of one I dislike.

>What do you like best about her works? Do you think there's something to improve?

How she gets the appeal of cocky ukes. Wet blankets are no fun, but a guy who thinks in his heart that he's off to top, like in the Messiah series? Yes please. Cocky fuck who got in over his head like in Happy Shitty Life? Heck yes. She does cocky ukes very, very well, I feel they're often underutilized normally.

>What was your favourite character moment?

Just the entirety of Happy Shitty Life.

>Have you read any anthologies she took part in?

>Do you own any merch?

How do I get merch for Harada?

>Do you know any similar manga artists?

Her art reminds me of one chick who wrote for Gothic Lolita magazine, but that chick did wet blanket, underage looking ukes from what I recall.

>Are you familiar with her older works?

What, the Gintama DJ?

>Are you going to watch the One Room Angel live action?

Not a huge fan of Live-Action, so probably no.

 No.2655

Question, I somehow recall there being a doujinshi for One Room Angel out there, anyone know it? Or did I dream it up?

Agree. Nii-san fucked me up bad initially but after the story really sunk in I liked how his character was handled (especially how his family tried to "fix" him) and how the trauma he experienced lead him to hound the high of having power over someone smaller than him was done pretty well despite the subject matter. It's probably the most messed up work Harada has done in my opinion but it was poignant to say the least. I also like that she didn't go full happy ending because when it's all said and done the other guy was just as traumatized himself but instead of seeking revenge on someone smaller than him (Like nii-san did) he went for the predator himself. It was an interesting take. I really enjoyed the girl character being a lesbian and the concept of lavender relationships being addressed.

>She does cocky ukes very, very well, I feel they're often underutilized normally.

Agree about this too, I wish other mangakas took notes.

nii san was the closest i've ever had to reading something that had all the shit i liked in it, reversible sex, uncomfortable age gaps, both characters being full homos and loads of angst about being fay gags
Like what the previous anona mentioned, i really liked how it was clear that there won't be a clear cut/straightforward happy ending for these characters, it feels much more genuine and in-line as opposed to them just being able to fight back against homophobia right away, the story brought to mind what smells like green spirit would be like if the teacher had a bigger role

one room angel and color recipe are also elite, i especially love the psychological sadism in color recipe, harada's one shots are all elite too love how much empthasis she puts on edgy dynamics

I started and finished all of Happy Shitty Life this week, and it's left a massive void in my life. It's been a while since I enjoyed a BL manga this much. Everything from the characters to the leads' relationship to the humor was exactly what I wanted. I'd only read One Room Angel and Nega before, and while I thought they were pretty good, I didn't really get the hype around Harada. I understand now, although I'm now eternally suffering knowing I'll never find another comedy BL as funny and well-written as this again.

What are you talking about, it's on going, right? Harada announced that the 6th volume will be released next week. I'm following the official release in my first language so maybe I'm missing something though?

Maybe anon has read the scanlations and thought it ended in volume 4 or something? But yes, it's ongoing and volume 6 is coming out now.

I don't know how many other people fall in to this category, but I feel as if her Gintama doujins have def left more of an impact on me, despite also loving her original works, and despite never having seeing Gintama at the time

I read them before I was ever aware of her other works, and I was too young to be reading them, which is probably part of the impact, but the feeling of them has stuck with me. I've thought of them regularly through out the years.
They are just so filthy and evocative

I like their short lengths, being able to be a very focused expression of a particular fetish. So beautiful, with just enough characterization and emotion. I feel like Harada and I carry and identical set of kinks and preferences, just so lucky lol. I could easily imagine myself in the scenarios presented without any thought or friction

They've really inspired me, I still carry some mementos of them along with me online in some non-obvious ways, I feel like they'll be stuck in my head forever and I'm okay with that

This post inspired me to read Harada's gintama djs, which one is your favorite? It also reminded me to reread Gintama since I never finished it anyway, thanks nonna

Yayy, I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you enjoy your Gintama reread :D For a favorite, I probably have to say "Me Yami Otoko", the one where his eyes get injured. I love the cool tough guy being sooo pitiful, I love how fervent Gintoki is… Also there's almost nothing superfluous about it, straight to the point lol. (It gets a bonus point for tapping into a specific fetish of mine when he pours water into his lap. Oh Harada, lets meet and talk over lunch LMAO)

Runner up goes to "Wakagaeri Hen". Man she draws him so cute and soft. Truly a shotacon's dream manga, not much to say besides that lol

Revisiting them has been very sweet. Oddly, they remind me of the holiday season. Best enjoyed in cold weather under the blanket ♥

>Yatamomo finally got released in English like 2 days ago (in my region)
>Go to buy a volume online to support Harada

I'm glad we're winning Haradasisters but damn I wish I could've gotten a physical copy before it sold out *cry*

I should check if it's finally out in english, everytime I go to book stores they say it's not out quite yet or it's not in stock currently…

Maybe try to look for them in physical stores, in case they still have them in stock or can preorder them for the next time they will be reprinted?

AYRT, I do check my local bookstore every other week but they don't usually get in Harada's works for some reason (they do have a fuckton of BL in general though, no doubt thanks to me lmao). It looks like they sold out during the initial pre-order, but if they're that popular then I guess they'll have to reprint them. Here's hoping to a quick restock!
