No.962
This thread is for recommending and discussing youtubers and channels you enjoy. In my case the type of youtube content I enjoy is gaming, true crime/horror and pop culture/internet oddities/meme fandom analysis so I'll drop some channels here based on that.
Fandom/meme/internet oddities analysis:
Internet historian, Whang!, blameitonjorge, fredrik knudsen, Inside a mind, Izzzyzzz, Jenny nicholson, LEMMiNO, LSuperSonicQ, Nick robinson, Sarah Z, Super eyepatch wolf, Defunctland, Yesterworld entertainment.
Gaming:
Arlo, Matt mcmuscles, TheRunawayguys(And the individual youtubers that are affiliated with that channel. If you're looking for female content creators here, Lucahjin is my fave of this friend group but Masaeanela is cool too), Nerrel, Vinny vinesauce(The fullsauce), Noodle, Oddheader, Scott the woz, Stop skeletons from fighting, tech rules, Nintendo life, Good vibes gaming.
True crime/horror:
Fascinating horror, Reignbot, Tara A. Devlin, Wendigoon, Atrocity Guide, Thafnine, Shrouded hand, Barely sociable. I'm kinda on the fence with Nexpo and Nightmind cause they've been hit and miss lately but I enjoyed their older content.

I want to find more youtubers who talk about fandom related content. Not just the material the fandom is based around. Most people who claim to be "fandom historians" or whatever on youtube come off as outsiders who only know about it second hand.
As far as Youtubers I'd recommend who hang out in fandom spaces: Jenny Nicholson comes off as pretty sincere and is fun to listen to and Quinn Curio is ok though I don't agree with all of her takes.

>>5278I mean I don't have interest in even the most "well developed" female characters at most I like them in the show, but I'm still not shipping them het or yuri with the exception of HomuMado.
I'm straight, I'm sure that factors in, but I hate every time someone gets all up in arms about shipping being mainly yaoi. I can even think of fandoms with big het communities like X-Files, its just most fandom is female and most women want to write about men, nothing wrong with that. No one complains about yurifags being mainly men
No.5280
>>5278Personally, I agree with the female characters' writing being a big part of it
However, no amount of good character writing in a vacuum will make me want to ship two of them if the dynamic and chemistry between them just don't work for me. Even if I like the girl and the boy on their own, it doesn't mean that I'll like seeing them together if their on-screen interactions are limited to some vague simpery and her being his damsel once, and tv shows are full of these lukewarm romances most of which are obviously hetero
No.5281
>>5278Hey I watched this today too! I understand this argument and would normally agree. However, as somebody who was on tumblr at the time and has managed to avoid learning anything about those shows outside of basic tumblr osmosis, I think it's a valid point–none of the SuperWhoLock women were beloved enough to breach containment. If you showed me a lineup of every "important" woman from all of those shows I guarantee you it would be my first time laying eyes upon any of them. I will compare it to its contemporary: Game of Thrones. I also didn't absorb much but the basics about this show but could tell you that the dragon bitch is Daenerys, the incest one is Cersei, the big one is Brienne, etc.
Also I haven't watched all of Aeons' stuff so maybe it's not entirely true but she always seems a little disparaging against shipping culture when it comes up so I really don't put much stock into her opinions about it.
>>5279>I mean I don't have interest in even the most "well developed" female characters at most I like them in the showIt really doesn't help that the most "well developed" girl is usually the one who canonically sinks the superior m/m ship.
No.5282
>>5281I was on Tumblr as well, and while I didn't watch any of those shows, I was really into Once Upon a Time.
I remember it had a huge shipping fandom, so much so that people even shipped the actors together.
>It really doesn't help that the most "well developed" girl is usually the one who canonically sinks the superior m/m shipEhhhh, not really, at least not in my experience, usually the most developed girl is an antagonist or a character with a redemption arc
No.5283
>>5282Agree thinking of characters like Azula or Harley and Ivy, its usually the villians, and they are good characters!
But even though I think they are well written I'm not interested in fan works or shipping them, meanwhile I'll read novel length fics about two minor male side characters who only appear in 4 episodes.
No.5285
>>5278>It's like saying "oh you'd be straight if you just had better men in your life."Not the point you were trying to make but sometimes I consider this.
No.5287
>>5283Anon who posted about the vid here, that's what I was thinking. No matter how good a female character is I'm never as invested in shipping them as I am with guys, and I'll go all in on some literally whos with less material to work with. I think it really is a case of "my brain sees boys as a playground I can do whatever in," while female characters I'll always feel reluctant to toy with.
No.5289
>I'll read novel length fics about two minor male side characters who only appear in 4 episodes
It's because you are attracted to them, honestly it's simple as that.
Men do the same, they make plenty of fanart and even hentai fangames about characters that appeared once or twice, just because they were hot enough.
No.5290
>>5289Not denying that at all, already said that my straightness is a factor in enjoying yaoi.
Though not always, sometimes there's also just a fun personality the show decides not to actually use. I think the fun of reading/writing fanfiction is playing with aspects of canon which will otherwise never be explored.

I always get a weird feeling when I'm watching youtubers that they are "fake fan" for lack of another term. I'm slightly older than a lot of them, but still within the same rough age demographic, and I feel like the way they talk about sites like Tumblr or older fandom communities just doesn't seem real or authentic to my experience with them.
No.5325
>>5323The reasonable side of me says that they treat fandom clinically because if people knew what they felt really strongly about (IP/ships/tropes) it could get them bullied, dogpiled, or cancelled. The hater in me says they are all grifters. The only one who seems authentic is Coley because she actually talks about the ships, tropes, and fics she likes. She is very clearly invested in fandom and not just writing a book report about her trip to the zoo.
No.5326
>>5325Grifter is a strong word, but its not just the fact that they don't seem to be as big into shipping and whatnot, its more like the things they meantion being big at the time weren't as large, or the way they speak of a community and what they meantion being the most popular characters seems skewed. Its just weird, it feels like they are recounting second hand the fandom as an outsider instead of actually talking about their time in a community.
Or maybe I'm the weirdo and now I'm needlessly cynical.

I've had to block or mute English fandom accounts left and right because I don't want to see the smallest, dumbest things people argue about. I really hate how both extremist leftists and groyper alt-righters are becoming increasingly obnoxious, using Japanese media as a tool for their political culture wars. It's so tiresome.
