I guess Shoujo is a ways off from yaoi, but I thought it'd be fun to talk about anyway.

I was surprised to see new drama about a show I watched 1000 years ago. I don't understand why it's so hard to put aside your hate for something and do the job you were paid for. Like, did they think nobody was gonna raise a stink about it? In these extremely turbulent times for translators???

And people will still act like I'm some tinfoil hat /pol/ user when I point out to them that this shit actually happens and that watching dubs is like listening to fanfiction.

Wow, I actually love Discotek since they are the only company that actually releases the older anime I enjoy. I'm glad they are distancing themselves at least and am sad that this happened under their label. I trust the subs will be fine and it's an unfortunate situation. I've only read the Lovecom manga and have no great love for it, but this sucks for fans and I'm sorry your legal release is saddled with this.

Also, I can't believe it's JelloApocalypse of all people? Not that he doesn't seem the guy to try to "fix" an anime and make it more "modern." But like the fact that he got professional translating work at all? I just figured he was the funny voice guy and don't understand why he'd be in this position at all. And stuff like Cr1TiKaL being voice talent?? Not saying a youtuber can't voice act professionally, but this is a cursed production lol.

I'm glad they dropped him but the statement just reads like they're only barring him because he was retarded enough to post his schizo rant online and not that he did anything wrong with the script. Every localizers' tweets about the situation is like that too, none of them are condemning what he did but that it makes them look bad or feeds into "anti-loc delusions".

>Cr1TiKaL

I found this weird at first too but IIRC it was for an in-universe dating sim character whose voice acting is intentionally supposed to be shit so it's more like a gag casting than him actually being a VA.

Why do you think the subs will be safe? I saw this being discussed in the thread. What's to stop people who sub from doing similar nefarious things?

he's not a new youtuber or anything, if you were on tumblr back in the day he was the guy who made that controversial "Welcome to Tumblr" video

I was on tumblr back then but will admit to being guilty of ignoring everything that wasn't fanart or fanfic. It's been fun to peek at the drama today though. Who are dubs even for these days?

I have family and friends who otherwise aren't anime fans who won't watch shows with me without a dub. There are so many series I've seen both dubbed and subbed and it gives you a big appreciation for one's that aren't total garbage even if they still don't beat the original.
Personally I think as an optional way to watch a series it doesn't hurt for it to exist, especially for shows and movies aimed at a younger or family audiences. Who knows maybe someone will get into anime through dubs and then work their way to subs, everyone needs and acess point and when they're as bad as this sounds like it is you can at least thankfully ignore it or laugh about it knowing the original still exists.

There's a streamer I follow who claims that he had to watch the dub for Spy x family cause "The characters talk too fast." Probably an edge case but I'm never gonna forget that cause it's so baffling and hilarious to me. I also get the impression that some people would rather watch dubs cause they want to have anime on the side without paying too much attention to it.
