here's some yuri that makes me think of bl:
>https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/cat_piercing one-shot. cold, possessive top with a weak-willed bottom. picrel is from this.
>https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/with_that_forbidden_girl_in_a_forbidden_placetitle sort of gives it away but this leans hard into the ~forbidden love~ trope. it's not cute & fluffy as it usually is in yuri though; rather kind of dark and sexy and desperately co-dependent.

>>44Gundam has some cool girls. Haman Karn and Cima Garahau for instance. They're fucked up without being hysteric banshees you're supposed to just hate nor dolls with trivial "flaws". I also love Diana from Turn A both as a character and think her design is pretty and one of my favourite in anime. Sumeragi from 00 also gets an honorable mention from me.
I think Gundam gets a little overlooked by western female otaku because mecha anime in general have an undeserved reputation of being just pew pew robot fights here, but Gundam series (and a lot of other mecha anime really) tend to be more character-driven space operas if anything. It's a little funny noticing the difference between Japanese women gushing over the Gundam franchise and then it being quiet across the pond (aside from the infamous Wing fangirls in the 90s). I'll end my Gundam autism here.

>>702tldr; Haman and Cima are jaded war criminals, charismatic manipulators, and stopped giving a fuck in general. Haman in particular is off the deep end beyond her warmongering with being too troubled by events from her youth and isn't a good person. Cima carries a lot of baggage from her past as well but at least seems like someone you wouldn't mind having a personal relationship with, if you don't mind that she's a war criminal.
>also how do you define a "doll with trivial flaws"I had in mind a type of anime character that gets pushed by the narrative as defective or flawed but it's just a single trait that either serves to make them cute/quirky or is otherwise something that barely even qualifies as a flaw. maybe the purpose of geicomi/bara differs so strongly from yaoi/bl that it needs to be categorically separated.
anyway i'm finding that korean/chinese webtoons don't often give me "uwuu pure lilies uwuwuwuwuwuwuw" vibes. they feel like they were made by actual women. so, here's some stuff i liked; most of these can be found on mangago, but do pop by mangadex for better scans (maybe, idk if they'll be there because mdex is corny about copyright).
>Her Tale of Shim Chonga favorite, so it's first. historical drama chronicling the relationship between a poor, roguish slum girl and the wife of a noble. the schemes they pull to get revenge on the wife's family are fun to watch.
>Opium, by Aji didn't finish this one, but it's about a pair of doctors in umm…early, developing south korea. feels like a bl kinda because of how wimpy and blushy the mc is against her love interest (who's cold, unfeeling, manipulative and always in control of the situation, etc.).
>Moonlight Gardenit's like abo, kind of…except omegas are the only gender. the main setting is a brothel and there's this entire caste of women who forcibly "bloom" once a month (e.g. they get stupid horny and start to smell like flowers). the world is also matriarchal, which is based.
>Beloved (Jaeliu)another favorite. age-gap between a doctor (i think she was 30…something?) and a high-schooler she accidentally hooked up with. it's dramatic and tackles the subject seriously, though. kind of ends on an unsatisfying note, so be careful.
>What Does The Fox Say kind of a gl classic. though i only faintly remember it because i read it back in high-school, lol. anyway it's about women in an office…and the mind games they play on one another.
this has gotten crazy long so i'll stop here but as a bonus recommendation: the gl version of the sadistic beauty side-story is pretty good. fluffy bdsm.

>is there ever any outrage from gay men about fujoshi ~sexualizing them~?I never see it. From personal experience, most Jap gay men are "meh" about the existence BL, and at worst just laugh at it. As long as fujos aren't acting creepy towards real life gays they don't care. Also more and more are reading it due to widespread internet use both improving the quality of BL (due to easy access to info, reviews, opinions, etc), and making it easier to discover different kinds of BL. There's occasionally BL review columns in gay magazines these days.
That's not to say there has never been trouble. Like 30 years ago there was some hostility because of some dumb drama that happened between BL readers and geicomi readers. It's kinda complicated but comes down to some out of line childish fujos sticking their nose where it doesn't belong and forcing their ideals on geicomi by bugging magazine editorials, and then gays retaliating by ridiculing BL and women in general. This was fairly short lived, and has since long been addressed and put in the past by acting like adults.
Yuri could have had a similar fate if straight men didn't perpetually have their heads up their asses. For a lot of Japanese lesbians, hostility towards straight men in yuri isn't because of the inherent fact that they're straight men, but rather how they completely dismissed women while basically invading and taking over what was a women's space, and their continued attitude and behavior over the decades to follow. In a way this has some similarities to the above issue of old fujos sticking their nose where it didn't belong, but in this case the issue has gone on for decades and never remedied because of the out of control arrogance of straight men and them not even pretending to care or listen. There has been the occasional suggestion of making terms to split women-targeted and men-targeted lesbian genres, but lesbians are holding on hard to yuri because it was theirs to begin with, and since straight men do not give even the slightest fuck about how women feel, men also stick with yuri and nothing has ever come of it. So basically tldr; decades of arrogant straight male behavior has created a hostile situation in the Japanese yuri community, when all men had to do was the simple job of not being assholes.
No.910
>>907From my experience gay men who aren't fudanshis are largely indifferent to BL and don't really care about fujos or their existence, at worst they laugh at how unrealistic it is. But not once have I come across an actual gay man with a penis who had meltdowns over muh fetishization, the bigger annoyance for them are the faghags treating them as accessories and closeted bi men who want to have them as sex dispensers.
>>908A very interesting read, thank you so much for writing it anon. I haven't seen a lot of documentation about Japanese lesbians and their relationship with yuri so it's great to hear some insight on it. I've heard bits and pieces like that they love Sailor Moon for its lesbian couples and treat Utena as their bible but most of them just seem to be into shipping rather than original content. I don't know. I can't imagine any legitimate lesbian looking at the yuri series portraying oversexualized 16-year olds performing for the male gaze so I often wonder what they even consume over there.

>>907>also, is there ever any outrage from gay men about fujoshi ~sexualizing them~?I think there's a growing interest in more realistic gay relationships in BL among fujoshi. Not because of muh representation but simply because there's a lot more to offer in terms of narrative and scenarios, and in turn it seems there's also a growing demand for this kind of BL among gay men in Japan. See the success of Until I Met My Husband. I always got the impression that the reason why most gay men are indifferent towards BL or openly reject it is because they're only exposed to the most surface-level popular stuff, and for many years that stuff was shit like Junjou Romantica. Japan homos are now finding out about the huge variety of modern BL and they are getting into it.

also: usually if two girls genuinely hate one another it's over a guy, something petty and stereo-typically "feminine" (they're both the prettiest girls in the school and arguing about that), or played up for sex appeal and "cat fights".
i hope this doesn't sound too spergy/tinfoil-y. tl;dr – most female characters in animanga are fucking terribly written, even in genres aimed towards women. pmmm girls aren't, and that's probably why they tend to rope in people who usually only ship m/m.

>>1546I definitely don't think you sound tinfoil-y. In fact while I've heard people say that the rise in slash and yaoi fangirls was due to a desire for diverse representation and the like I'd argue it's because most female characters are so poorly written, especially in the world of animation.
Japan either has decent all female cast shows, or the characters are terrible 10th generation dere archetypes which were already played out by the early 2000s.
Meanwhile, over here in the west you've either got characters who only serve to be a love interest, or are the "strong independent woman" who all have the same exact marketable personality. It's terrible.
I think America media especially in recent years has an issue with seeing women as a hivemind. There can only be one "good" type of female character. This has been made especially apparent to me on my recent Disney re-watch journey. There is somehow actually more female diversity in older Disney movies than recent ones. It's actually mind-boggling.
For instance Cinderalla has the cold, Lady Tremaine. She is calculating, scheming, holds resentment towards Cinderella because she was born into wealth. Cinderella herself is a bit snarky (didn't remember that till the rewatch lol) kind and caring despite the situation, and holds resentment towards her step-family but finds herself in too a poor situation to do anything about it. The stepsiblings while underdeveloped are a bit boorish and loud, some might say stupid even. They have dreams of a future with a prince and probably hold those aspirations due to growing up in a rich household and are loath to give up a lavish life even with dwindling money.
I'm not saying it's peak women or anything, it is still a Disney film lol.
But it's a way more variable female cast than something like Raya where every single woman besides Sisu acts the exact same. The last several female Disney/Pixar protagonist besides the Encanto one could be flipped around personality wise and none of the movie plots would change much.
Modern animated movies aren't feminist because the woman can kick ass. In fact all it is doing is create a new mold that a woman must fall into. Older Princesses in particular like Cinderella or Snow White have for years been targeted as weaker because they don't fit the new vision of what a woman MUST be while Disney gets to sit around, patting itself on the back because they have somehow become a new pioneer of womanhood, doing the bare minimum.
No.1572
>>1562I think that’s a really interesting take that I’ve rarely seen mentioned elsewhere. People pushing for diversity and representation weren’t interested in writing cool characters. A lot of black women for example have no fucking personalities and no surprise people end up gravitating towards the male characters because they have a personality.
No.1573
>>1572I wouldn't say that they aren't interested. I'd say it's more a case of being overly cautious for the sake of marketability and conforming to acceptable roles for women and minorities.
I think for big-budget productions things are focus tested so much characters get distilled in the process. Someone in the writers room probably cares but then they are smoothed out, undesirable qualities stripped away until there isn't even an interesting or unique character left.
I don't think these companies are actively trying to sabatoge representation or anything malicious like that, but when you fail to divisify the roles you give groups of people it becomes a problem. "Quirky black friend" isn't a issue except when that is the only role you write for African Americans. I feel the same way about modern mainstream female protagonists. They are all focus-tested to hell they become completely interchangeable. I also wouldn't care so much if companies like Disney didn't deride their past works because those women don't conform to their new mold of character.
This is normally the part where I'd say anime better, but while I do think there are significantly more roles for women Japan has an issue with exotizing black and tan ladies and using them as niche fanservice. Still like Queen of Sheba from FGO though she shined in Salem.
No.1577
>>1546>i personally think these sorts of complicated female relationships are rarely seen in other animanga. You bring up a very good point there, anon. If I could get over the disgust of male neckbeards slobbering over PMMM ships I would enjoy them much more, but the complex relationships the girls had with each other mirrors why I like BL to begin with. Someone once said that BL is like "two men in a lesbian relationship" which is the best way to put it as the entire thing is based on two fictional men (i.e. not real sentient flesh and blood men) in a same-sex relationship written by a woman.
>>1573>I feel the same way about modern mainstream female protagonists. They are all focus-tested to hell they become completely interchangeable. Also good take. The uncanny, robotic presence they have makes them harder to sympathize with because they've been carefully calculated to conform to a formula instead of being organic. The writer has to self-censor and pull back punches because the world seemingly isn't ready for a female main acting and being treated like a real person.
>Still like Queen of Sheba from FGO though she shined in Salem.I love her too! Crazy to see someone here liking such a niche character, all the smooches for you nonny mwah

Anon your second and third one are exactly my tastes down to the last detail that if you didn't include siscon I would be suspecting that I wrote this in my sleep. But honestly, dynamics like this are so, so rare in f/f pairings.
To be honest a lot of the dynamics I like in f/f are very similar to what I like with m/m ships but yuri very rarely delivers. The stakes are always yawn-inducingly low and the characters never feel interesting, either it's painfully mundane regular women with little to no conflict or a moidish interpretation of one. I'm a messy girl and I want to read about stories that go hard. I'm specifically a huge sucker for butch/femme where it's the masculine girl who's being emotionally weaker than the feminine one.
