Thoughts on delinquent manga or delinquents in general?
There was a thread about fujos and this genre on /a/ earlier today, so I got curious about what people think here.
So far I've only read picrel and it has to be one of my favourite manga ever.

The most I've ventured into delinquents is Mondo Oowada from Danganronpa. I love his heart of gold. He brings a unique perspective to that series due to his upbringing as essentially a heir to a delinquent gang. Delinquent gangs are unheard of in Mondo's (2000s-2010s) time so his inclusion was just as a homage to the genre. He never deviates from typical delinquent tropes but that was never a problem personally. Many in the Danganronpa fandom think he's a one-trick pony character though and/or think his hair is incredibly stupid. I love how straight the Danganronpa team pulled him off since they deconstruct delinquentism without dismissing the genre's complexities.

I've heard JoJo has lovely delinquents but I've never gotten around to watching/reading that series.

Samefag. Danganronpa spoilers. Praying spoiler works like this.

Mondo murdered Fujisaki over his manliness complex. I'm not sure if it's common in the genre, but Mondo definitely has self-esteem issues that are compounded by his gang. His gang loves his image, not his inner self, and Mondo is in a way trapped by the gang that his brother founded. His brother really wanted what was best for him but Mondo stayed within the gang regardless. He's too much of a wimp to get out of the manliness hugbox, isolating him. He hardly cares about anyone during the events in the game, only getting along well enough with Naegi as he's the milk-toast main Male character.

The Danganronpa team knew this, and constructed Fujisaki's and Mondo's dynamic well, since Fujisaki was cast out, during puberty, of the "manliness hugbox" Mondo was born to thrive in. I believe they definitely would've became great friends if circumstances were different. I would've loved to see a more well-adjusted Mondo and a more ugly Fujisaki, deconstructing manliness further with how Fujisaki adjusts to growing up into a man.

>delinquents in general
They are usually the best character in any given cast or at the very least are high tier. I especially like it when an adult character is revealed to have been a delinquent of some sort, it's cute.

I peek in on the modern YYH fandom sometimes and am happy to see Kuwabara finally get more love. Back in the 00s it was the Hiei/Kurama kawaii yaoi power hour no matter where you went. He had a whole episode about saving his kitty, how could you not love him?

A heart of gold seems to be a pretty standard part of the trope, at least most depictions I've seen seem to share that. I don't think that's a problem, I find it extremly endearing.
Jojo has Jotaro, Josuke and Okuyasu, but I feel like a lot of characters have that delinquent kind of attitude.
>think his hair is incredibly stupid
Stupid haircuts are part of the appeal imo.

I should probably take the chance to talk about my boys. Mitsuhashi(blonde) and Itou(spiky) feel pretty unique to me.
Mitsu is a cocky cheater, and even though he has the strength to not be like that, he is still gonna find the easy way out of a problem. The complete opposite of an honorable delinquent. Still has that heart of gold though.
I've seen someone describe Itou as an otaku larping as a delinquent, who is larping as a typical manga delinquent, and I find that pretty accurate.

Absolutely!

I assume heart of gold is done as a sort of "appearances can be deceiving" attitude. Agree that it's almost always endearing. I also like the bumbling approach to delinquents that I sometimes see. Like they're trying to be tough but can't quite pull it off, goes hand-in-hand with the heart of gold trope.

That's part of it, but I also think it's an ideal. Someone that can be both rough and kind. Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken embodies that and that's the father of shonen, so delinquents probrably shares that dna.
>I also like the bumbling approach to delinquents
Can't think of an example from the top of my head, but that totally happened before, and yeah it's really cute.
Have you read KKOW by the way?

I haven't read it, but I saw the OVA years ago. It and Cromartie are my two favorite delinquent series.

I should watch the OVA one of these days. Cromartie has been on my to watch list for a while now.
Anyways, who is the best boy? It's Mitsu for me.

Mitsu was probably my favorite too his antics are hilarious, though Itou is a very close second they play off each other well.

You should totally watch it. It's double the length of most OVAs and worth your time. A lot of fun delinquent videos came out of the 90s, and Kyou Kara Ore Wa is the best of them I've seen.

Maybe I'll check out the manga since it's been several years.

It's one of the funniest manga I've read, the charecters bounce off each other so well.
