Figured this is best in OT.
Certain careers are overrepresented in BL, such as sports, boybands, and salarymen. But what are some lesser used jobs with homoerotic potential that you would like to see (or see more of)?
This can also include ones which are more common to see in gay male targeted media, such as sailors or cowboys.
Pic is not super relevant but found it cute and didn't have any anime boy pictures that would work.

Coming from TF, all of them

I never thought I'd be writing Geologist yaoi until I started writing for Beachcomber. I think what work forces that go represented lack are exciting personalities. It's why House did so well. Every form of employment will have work place dynamics because there is a superior to everyone somewhere and a goal to finish. But personalities are what really make it exciting. Cowboys are eccentric and charming. If you take out the personality aspect, it can be very boring reading about a guy who shovels horse shit for a living. Daredevil (Netflix) has two lawyers who's line of work is completely devoid of undertones, but it's their love for each other that makes the set up worth it.

In pic related we have military man, musician/green beret, scientist engineer, geologist, pilots 1-4, DJ/Communications officer, abomination from science, construction worker, another scientist, unemployed but rich, unemployed but broke, former war criminal, and construction worker. Sports and boybands are easy because it's just more than 2 guys in the same place for longer than 5 minutes. But every job has potential if the creator actually has a dynamic that will force two people to be in close proximity to one another constantly.

While sports in general might be overrepped I think boxing is gay as fuck but not as commonly used.

Trains/taxi/bus driver, ect. Anything where you have characters interacting for but a fleeting moment every day as a part of routine works as well.

Chefs! Food as a metaphor for love, my beloved. It's equally good if it's two chefs with one as a mentor or chef x regular restaurant patron.

>Daredevil (Netflix) has two lawyers who's line of work is completely devoid of undertones, but it's their love for each other that makes the set up worth it.

I really wish there were more lawyer stories, the idea of a defense attorney falling in love with the guy he's representing in particular is super brainworm-y to me.

The Punisher arc of Daredevil was absolutely insane. There's toxic yaoi, and then there's whatever the fuck they had going on that entire season.

Having to represent the guy you know is wrong but have strong personal feelings for, crazy.

"You're the kind of man this city needs."

Japan seems incapable of making clergy yaoi that's actually incorporates aspects of the church beyond the garments, so proper clergy yaoi I guess.

I love courtroom dynamics too! The machinations inherent to the profession are fertile grounds for psychological BL, but I guess no one really writes it because no one wants to study the damn law just to get their rocks off kek

I never had interest in cowboys from the pop culture image but I got into Old West era from a history perspective recently and it was pretty interesting learning about what they actually did. Mostly very young and poor men doing the very dull monotonous work of leading cattle across long distances, and if they weren't alone then all they had was their friends to ease the boredom. The guy who did the cooking was treated like a god because food (let alone good food) was so scarce and the small amount of downtime where they would eat/drink with the others led to pretty close bonds forming. Not to mention no women around until you got to a town.
>>12934
>Trains
I'm here to bat for steam trains specifically, because driver/fireman duos are like a pilot/copilot situation but even more oldschool and hardcore. These guys would stay working together once they got familiar, and they had to be good at it to keep the thing running and not get themselves/everyone on board killed. I heard enough accounts from research/documentaries about how close these guys would become, and they were stuck in pretty close quarters too, literally, plus very sweaty with all that steam and soot everywhere. I need Japanese train fujos to stop sleeping on this.
And in modern times, supposedly some train drivers and conductors are known for having a close working relationship. At least the ones in this article are 'very good friends' who also take baths together during the working day.

I think Japan's complicated history with Christians make it aesthetics only.

I love their nun designs and priestly robes but it lacks all the religious guilt or inquisition tier zeolot dynamics. Their churches are just ambiguous lord rpg churches. Or go the way of evangelion, using names only because 'they sound cool.'

I'm not into westerns myself because they're so romanticized in a way that just doesn't really interest me. I'd be more interested in survival, the wild west being actually wild, and less rifle swinging and more finding shelter during a dust bowl.

 No.12939

This probably wouldn't be a great story and probably so niche, but it would be hilarious if there was a grocery store owner x food distributor yaoi. Like the grocery store owner owns a small one in some podunk town and has to trek to the big city to get the fresh goods from the man at the food terminal. The grocery store owner is crotchety and sleep deprived as he has to get up so early to even get to the damn terminal where everyone's trying to fleece him for subpar vegetables EXCEPT for one man, one man only. yes, I'm drawing from real life kek

What got me interested was the actual stories of real people from that time, because there are so many that are better than any film out there which is sadly the case with anything based on historical figures or time periods. Something always gets changed to make it more marketable to modern audiences instead of sticking to facts.

Have you tried VME already? I remember there being potential for homo angst there with Roberto.

Vatican Miracle Examiner, the surprise priest homo that made 2017 a fun time.
It's not outright BL, just very heavily slashy and fanservicey (unless something has changed in the novels recently)

I wonder if there's any shinto based yaoi then. I don't know much about them beyond shrine maidens though lmao but a guy miko would be fine too

I’m surprised there’s so little military yaoi. Lots of young, fit dudes. All male environment is oozing with potential for homo. War setting is begging to be written into hurt/comfort. I know military isn’t exactly a popular interest with women I’m surprised zilch, zero.

That's an interesting thought. Yokai-themed BL sometimes involves monks but I can't think of one right now that involves a shinto priest.
>>12944
I think the military as a setting has some elements in common with the mafia setting such as the violence, strict adherence to a hierarchy and indeed the all male environment so it could certainly work.

You've summoned me, this is my subject of autism. Miko are female only, but there are also male shrine priests called kannushi. Compared to Buddhism, Shinto has a very lax attitude towards sex, including homo sex. Once Buddhism was in the mix, Chinese beliefs about jizz = life force were brought over, so they believed that if you did it too much, whether with your hand or a partner, you would hasten your death.
>>12945 mentioned yokai-based BL but I think that onmyoji protagonists are more common if you're looking for non-monks, or the roles of kannushi and onmyoji are mixed up, which I don't even know if that was impossible but onmyoji become less common after the Heian period, it seems.
There's a mythical story from the Nihon Shoki of two specific male Shinto priests (Ama no Hafuri and Shinu no Hafuri) serving Amaterasu who were buried in the same grave that some interpret as possibly being gay, but no one knows for sure.
Japanese Buddhism is definitely gayer overall with its chigo traditions and monks having a reputation of being dirty old men visiting male prostitutes because sex is only bad if it's with women, but the bald aesthetic is unfortunate. I'm very partial to kariginu so I much prefer Kannushi. They were one of the few classes of men who didn't shave their heads in the Edo period too, which is another bonus.

Lately I've been plotting out a romance between two OCs, a sales assistant and a security guard who work for a department store. The sales assistant was based on the classic ultra camp smooth man in a suit type, and the security guard keeps a stoic face while working but laughs really easily off the clock.

I remember listening to an audiobook many years ago about letter carriers in the old west. People who'd ride a mule across crumbling trails to deliver messages and small trinkets. There was some real high stakes peril involved, and quite a number of the messages they carried were love letters to people working far away. If I recall correctly, most of them were women or teenage boys because you needed to be small and light to get through some of the obstacles nature threw in their path. People'd get familiar with the messenger and wait for them to pass by to gift them supplies.

>>12947
Onmyouji were, in real life, people who charted the stars and determined auspicious calendars for the authorities. They were more trusted by emperors than shogunates, so the move to military rules diminished their political power. If you've ever wondered why there's evil onmyouji in some Bakumatsu/Shinsengumi fiction, it's because that's roughly when the onmyoudo departments were fully shut down and the last man clinging to his social position got kicked out of office. People love to imagine he was bitter about it and sought revenge through supernatural means.

Being an Abe no Seimeifag since my teens, I think I trained my brain to really like kannushi and Heisan court robes. He and Hiromasa (and Douman, sure) are the most common ship material you'll find with those outfits, but they're far from religious, and often play with superstitions and myth that get copypasted in chuuni series all over. It does suck if you don't want supernatural elements.

I know I've seen recommendations for a Buddhist training retreat manga, and re: military that fighter pilot BL that was paywalled. I don't remember titles, gomin.

Aside from Onmyoji adaptations and HikaSai, I'm always thirsty for more Heian courtier BL. The poetry culture is fun and everyone was having affairs all the time, plus that one diary confirms that there were at least some men fucking. I've always been fascinated by the idea of a male writing poetry pretending to be a woman and it wouldn't even be hard for him to keep it up when visited if he sat behind a screen.

I'm a huge fan of westerns. I can just see like, some bounty hunters ala For A Few Dollars More getting some tip that some pony express guy is carrying some letter with information, and now they're all trying to hunt him down. He can hook up with the brooding Clintwood stand-in, who is out to protect him.
