Share and brainstorm ideas for original characters.

Do you have a fella crawling around your brain space with no one to pair him with? Have you made a no-name to fill a fic gap and gotten attached? What dos and don'ts do you try to adhere to when making characters?

Took hours to post this thread not because I was writing about the character I've been mulling over but because I couldn't pick an image for the OP.

I'm making a new OC and hit quite the snag. Usually when I make a new OC I start with a scenario concept that he's a part of, then build the world around that and make him walk through it. Sequences are fun and fairly easy to imagine because I know how the world would react and how he interacts with it, and it rolls from there with extra characters coming into being to fill in parts of the world. That means everything revolves around that starting character and stories focusing on anyone else are offshoots bound to return back to the main dude. Self indulgent I know but this is me getting my kicks.

Anyway the new OC is a concept for a character but not a scenario/world. Part of his concept is that he's to appear "like a background/side character" before they go into his background in more detail. BUT I DON'T GOT A REST OF A CAST TO BE THE FOREGROUND. I felt a strong compulsion to make this guy up but I don't have any strong feelings about how the rest of the characters should be to tuck him into the back of. I know it's an RPG party in a fantasy setting but it's not much more interesting than that.

During my teens I remember everyone had random OCs they could throw at whatever and draw solo art of all day, so I feel kind of silly not knowing how to work from that side again and feel content. I'm going to have another think about it then try describing ideas.

Could you use preexisting characters from a series you like to maybe jumpstart your OC building? Such as, imagine if your OC was inserted in xyz world, how would he react to the main characters in that series? And how would he react to the main characters from different series? Even tho inserting ocs other stories is usually seen as cringe (well, it usually is cringe to be fair)… if you do it to help your world building, it might give you ideas or dynamics you've never thought of. You might decide you want an annoyingly bright and innocent main character, because you like the interactions between this oc and your current one. Just as an example.

Thanks nona, you reminded me that this character originated in me watching a show and thinking "I want a character that looks like this guy but has more going on". I thought about other characters I've been enjoying recently and pretty quickly ended up with a whole party. Many things in their story are still undecided, but it's taking shape and I'm enjoying myself.

I typed some stuff up, but it's still embarrassing so I set it to expire.

Thanks if you do read it.

These are all such fun characters anon! The healer that can't die is such an interesting concept. Honestly, my autism would prevent me from coming up with a character like that because he seems too op. The rest of the party would be practically invincible with him on the team and that feels like cheating kek.
I'm already shipping the prince with his old man bodyguard btw would love to read your stories if you ever decide to write more.

I really like your tank character, Ansgar. I love when one character has to watch another character as a bodyguard, but they don't stop any of their antics. Your cast seems really interesting so far.

Dear nonas, what were your OCs doing for Valentine's day? Do they take turns with White Day too?

I didn't used to think much about these holidays, but now I have OCs in confirmed relationships I couldn't help imagining all kinds of things. White Day is actually really useful for returning unexpected gestures or those guys who get competitive with their bf, and for those who aren't living together yet they can sleep over at either home on the different dates. I really like Japan's color schemes for it too. Brown and pink looks really good on some characters, and white and blue has a princely charm. I think I could separate my OCs by who looks best in each, disregard gender roles.

These aren't going to make sense without context from the BL concept thread but: https://pastebin.com/djdQcB7S
Brown&pink - Hiro, Enji, George, Noah, Barardo, Russell, Theodore
White&blue - Murakami, Futoshi, Julian, Rafe, Silvan, Azabel
I never gave the full hair color list on those last guys so that's something to edit later. I'm slightly torn on one or two. It was Russell - red actual cherry n apples red, George - black or blond, Noah - dark pink/magenta, Silvan - turquoise, Theodore - platinum blond like dry grass, Azabel - white with a silver-blue depth, Julian - pale cyan, Rafe - dark gray. (It's messy doing this over two threads but I don't want to spam OC lore before the other BL concepts get seen and discussed.)

I have hatefucking on the brain right now so my mind wandered and came upon a concept of two fantasy mercenaries and their homoerotic rivalry. You've got a human mage and an axe-wielding warrior with wolf ears and a tail. Initially they meet in a dungeon as they're after the same artifact but the warrior gets there first and is like "Clearly I can crack your skull before you can get a spell off so just accept your defeat. Though I'll give it to you if you suck my dick." thinking the mage would say no and walk away sulking but the mage goes for it even though he finds it humiliating and over time they keep running into each other again and it devolves into a progressively more convoluted series of challenges leading into sexual favors as their dynamic shifts into frenemies cause the mage is a stubborn tsundere who can't back down from a challenge and the wolf warrior is a sadist. The challenges are situations such as "I bet you can't finish this complicated magic incantation while I play with your dick and stimulate your prostate."

Didn't draw pic related obviously, but have you nonas ever experienced something like this? For me I have a centaur and satyr OC who both started by me drawing Fig Cookie and Cream Unicorn Cookie a lot. The devs don't really care to give content to those two characters so I was like "fine I'll do it myself", but they've evolved much more and now I'm trying to make my own story in a fantasy setting with my own world-building and different fantasy races.

Oh absolutely. A lot of the DNA of my OCs is a hodgepodge of beloved characters trapped in a medium that failed to deliver either a satisfying character arc or a dynamic that should have been romantic. This one-off character from a Yu Yu Hakusho movie is the 30-year-old template for an OC that is almost completely unrecognizable now. If you follow fandom artists long enough you can sometimes see this process live.

A couple OCs I had through the end of highschool were basically FMA characters rebranded as shapeshifting hellhounds. I don't think people would recognize them by name or personality, but one of them kept a really similar design for the longest. I still think of them fondly but it was pretty goofy powertripping and the world building was extremely vague for large swathes of it. I don't recall any actual plot, just saying they had a dimensional portal and throwing them into crossovers with whatever I wanted. Most of all I made them cuddle and bother each other. One of them was a smug asshole who knew he could get away with it, and the other was the grumpy fuck who bailed him most of the time.

It's a really cool design, I can see why you'd want to take elements of it.
