I did in fact used to be into Hetalia, but as someone who got into these fandoms because I'm a huge history buff rather than the other way around, the characters in Hetalia suffer for being written by one person. They're colored by the biases and perceptions of those nations that the author has, and are written first and foremost to be exaggerated stereotypes of the country's people, rather than representations of the countries themselves. Countryhumans are nice in this regard since there's no "canon" version, so you get a lot of different takes on the countries, both personality and appearance wise, from a lot of different people. Take all these different versions of China, for example.
Regarding the artstyle: I'm not super into the "circle headed shapeless figures" look either, and…honestly neither are most of the people in the fandom. That artstyle is mostly used by young teens who can't draw. The good artists can be quite difficult to find on western social media these days, however, as many of them deleted or locked down their accounts over the past few years due to the global political upheaval that's been occuring.
I absolutely will not deny the part about a lot of the fandom being cringe as hell, however. That was a problem Hetalia had too, and is probably unavoidable in a form of entertainment based entirely off the premise of romanticizing and writing fanfic about history.
