Megami Tensei is a series of video games, mostly JRPGs. They have a ot of spinoffs with their own differences in gameplay, and they have a lot of similarities in terms of setting and recurring playable characters and enemies, who are demons. But overall, the games are mostly turn-based JRPGs and you collect monsters, kind of like in Pokemon except it's older than Pokemon. OP's pic is Helel, a high level demon. So basically you have:
>Megami Tensei 1 and 2 on the NES, the mainline games that started the series
>Shin Megami Tensei, the mainline series, the most recent is SMT5 on the Switch
>Persona, the most popular spinoff
>Digital Devil Saga on the PS2
>Devil Summoner, including Soul Hackers and the Raidou Kuzunoha games. Soul Hackers 2 has just been announced a few days or weeks ago but looks nothing like the previous games, and the battle system seems different as well
>Devil Survivor, on the DS and 3DS

They're niche games but are getting more and more popular outside of Japan these days because the games are getting more and more English translations, and even translations in other languages for the most recent ones. It has some fujoshi fanservice here and there because it's a series that has always been popular with girls and the devs like to pander to their female audience, despite what you would think just based on the recent Persona games. Some characters are canon gay or bi, or it's heavily implied, even if sometimes it's just as a joke. Some of the demons are hot guys as well. Isabeau is the real self-insert in SMT4, there, I said it.

I'm a regular in the P5 fandom! I have also recently picked up SMTV as my first mainline game. I'm enjoying it so far, but do find myself missing the social elements of Persona, whoops.

I picked up SMTV as my first entry into the series because I figured it would have the most QoL improvements and I have a thing for femboys. I've been having a good time with it so far, though my pace is pretty slow because I've also been playing other games around the same time. It does seem like among the demons there's way more waifus than husbandos, though. Off the top of my head last time I looked at my compendium fusion list I only saw Yoshitsune.

The demon husbandos tend to have high levels so you'll need to play more to get your harem of demonic pretty boys. I'm also playing very slowly because I'm very lazy, I just hope Vishnu is in.

For me, it's Baal.

In mainline SMT, the human characters are mostly paper cut-outs and all the writing effort goes towards the Demons, fusion, and fleshing out the heaven-hell dichotomy instead.

I'm going to process my intense desire to recruit Fionn by imagining my MC-kun as a shy nerdy gay guy. When he first meets Fionn he's like "Oh no, he's hot" and when he gets home from the second area he at one point just lounges in his bathtub thinking about that blonde cutie he met. When they meet again the next day Aogami notices that MC-kun's heartrate and body temperature suddenly spike.

Dojima could have preventively saved Inaba if he fucked Adachi in the ass before the murders happened. There, I said it.

So, the big question of every SMT discussion: what's you guys' favorite demon and why?

I always settle on Baal for this question both because of his design and because of the mythology. I can get really absorbed in reading about the Canaanites and their religions, it's fascinating to me. The fact that this iconic deity's design is also hot in SMT is icing on the cake. I've also been pimping out my Baal in dx2 and am quite pleased with him.

Some non-hot guy demons I also love are Barong, Cait Sith (I find the fairy race in general memorable), and the Lovecraftian ones, just at the top of my head.

I don't think I really have favorites, Baal is cute, Vishnu always saved my ass whenever he was in my team, I love Yoshitsune in P4 because without him I wouldn't have been able to beat Margaret and I'm looking forward to fusing him in SMT5, and Krishna is great too. Decarabia is cute, I wish there were more merchs of him.

I've played Persona 1-5 and 4 is my favorite, how do I get into mainline Megami Tensei? I tried the first SMT but it didn't do much for me and I never beat it.

Maybe just start with SMT3, SMT4 or SMT5 first? Since they have a bunch of QOL features compared to SMT1 and 2 and they have the press turn battle system.

It's been months since I started SMT5, I actually started it as soon as it got released and life got in the way and I'm only halfway through the game. I recently learned that there was some level scaling in place to disproportionately make you weaker if your level is too low compared to the enemies, and it makes you way too strong if you're just a few levels above them. It's annoying, but that explains a lot. I'm going to play the rest of the game on easy and maybe do a second run on normal or hard because I don't enjoy doing level grinding in a SMT game of all things. Fuck, I managed to get to level 99 in SMT4A just by playing normally and doing as many side quests as possible, wtf is this? If I manage to beat the game before P5R gets released on the Switch you'll need to congratulate me. It's doable, I'm in the third area where I'm told to beat Surtr and I already beat Yakumo in a boss fight. Which ending should I get first?

If you're going to go for all the side quests in this run, aim for the neutral ending. If not, do the order ending.
I was in a similar position as you lol. I got the game soon after its release, but ended up starting at late January since I felt like completing another game I got first. Ended up binge playing it for 100 hours in 4 weeks iirc. It's a good thing I don't mind grinding and managing things

Maybe I'll try to play more this weekend. On Saturday I'll be out with friends and do a bunch of stuff so Sunday should be a good day to play more video games. I haven't touched my Switch since I went somewhere on holidays so nearly a month ago, but whatever, my memory is good enough to know what I did last time I played.

So, an update: it's been actually a bit over a month since I didn't play SMT5 but I went back to it yesterday, reach the demon king castle, and finally fused Yoshitsune with charge so I'm making a lot of progress faster than usual. I took so much time playing this game I think I'll do a NG+ right after beating it. Fuck work.

One more update: I have free time this week and the next one so I'm trying to beat SMT5 for real this time. I reached Taito and I'm trying to build a better team by fusing demons because I'm a little underleveled. Any tips?

I don't even know which guy you're talking about the guy in the third pic is Serph from DDS (but with his design from the novels) and the guy from the fourth pic is Hallelujah from SMT4A.

The news of the upcoming Vengeance edition of SMT V made me remember this pairing. I never considered myself as being into ryona but the violent hatefucking art of these two is great. I even saw a writer on AO3 going for it as well last time I checked.
