I just bought Slow Damage a couple days ago and I was wondering, am I the only one who really can't stand this VN? I was so excited for it but now a few chapters in I'm really disappointed so far. I've loved all of the Nitro Chiral games before this one, I guess I appreciate the older ones more now. I might make a longer post about it in the vent thread later.

You're not alone, anon. I can safely say I… hated it? Maybe part of my problem stems from its failure to meet my own expectations–which weren't anything super crazy for the record. I expected it to be on par with the other NC games if not slightly better after watching everyone hype it up as the best one to date. I thought surely that 9 year gap between the release of it and DMMD had to mean something, but no, I guess it was just development hell kek.

There are definitely things I enjoyed about it. It was NC's most ambitious project yet and I really do think it took some huge steps in the right direction that have me looking forward to what they do next. The entire first half of Fujieda's route in particular was awesome, I started to think it made the crappy first 3 routes totally worth it. Then that ending with Sakaki and chaotic neutral Eiji hit and that feeling was vaporized in mere seconds. The bad definitely outweighed the good, I will not look back on this game fondly. Only the art, Ikuina, Igarashi, and Towa, who deserved a better game. Not a single love interest (no, not even Fujieda. He looked like shit the second he put on the normie clothes and his personality got unattractive. Peak was picrel). I'd like to hear your thoughts, maybe I'll fully vent out my own frustrations with the game at some point too.

Today I learned there were n+c music boxes. I feel like the song choices for slow damage and dmmd were really strange, and okay to be honest the whole thing is really strange. I found this by just looking up music boxes in general, never expected to see these.

There's a complicated feeling about slow damage I can't put my finger on it.
I associate N+C with old BL, the good old days of early-late 2000s fujos that would write about shiki being smexy >////<, even dmmd had it's VERY noticeable era with its overwhelming success but even if I didn't like most characters they are instantly recognizable. Even the least popular LIs like Bardo, Nano, maybe Zenya, still have this aura of being recognizable.
N+C loves to make the protagonists blend together for Chiral night, April fools, merch, even old mini games.
It's an era I associated with fun.
With slow damage I feel like something is missing. It's a gritty game like togainu once was but none of the LIs scream recognizable, they are all absurdly plain. It's not like they need to be color coded or have 10 accessories each but they feel almost like generic guy 1,2,3.
If Towa is still the most noteworthy thing and not any of the LIs, you did a horrible job.
It just feels like…it exists.
From an era from where vlbn is pretty much dead, I guess the setting reflects this dry period

I disagree since I'm a huge SDfag but I kind of get where you're coming from.
The main difference between a lot of their older works and SD is that SD wanted to be more story focused over yaoi focused at a lot of points, for one it's a hell of a lot longer than stuff like TNC and DMMD and I feel like the other games almost sort of went for style over substance at a lot of points to where the plot is an afterthought. I gotta argue with you on the love interests being generic though, everyone in SD is great and even the more tropey ones like Madarame feel like vaaast improvements on characters like Shiki who has literally no personality outside of edgy leather guy who becomes a cripple or a nazi.
I don't think BLVNs are dead at all, they're just evolving and challenging themselves more plot wise, but some people just prefer regular sex BLVNs which I guess is fine.

sweet pool is the shortest of them all and did story over love 1000x better than SD in my opinion. that one had me hooked but I didn't give two shits about SD's story until fajita's route, and I didn't get attached to anybody besides towa himself. even the dad from sweet pool left a stronger impression on me than the love interests or side characters in SD. lamento used to be the go-to example of nc's problems with shit pacing but it had nothing on SD. the story itself wasn't good enough for me to overlook any of that.

how so? shiki was at least highly amusing (and hot). madarame is "shiki at home", shiki after he got out the wheelchair and into PT but his looks faded, his chuuni went soft, and akira made him throw away his cringe kitana which he then broke up with him over and set off on a journey to find a new young twink to beat and rape. he mattered way less than shiki did too, shiki was Il Re after all and a major part of rin's route. madarame could be written out of the game entirely by
1. deleting his short, mediocre route that was even less relevant to the main plot than rei's

2. saying the mom or some pedo with an eye eating fetish was the one who gave towa his iconic eyepussy instead
because those are his only 2 contributions to the game. "oh wow, the guy who gets gang raped for fun enjoyed getting knocked around by his shitty bf in the past. this adds new layers to his character!" pfft.

Dude sweet pool's plot is godawful what are you talking about? At best it's just an improved gay version of Saya no Uta, but Saya wasn't good either so that's not saying much. The only route I thought was well done was the one with the meat baby but that still doesn't save the game from having the WORST love interest in nitro chiral, Tetsuo. The only character I liked in sweet pool was Makoto everyone else was either boring or obnoxious (Zenya).

Madarame's route is interesting as a character study chapter into Towa's past since unlike Shiki who just rapes Akira a couple of times and the route is over Madarame and Towa actually have some backstory and I like how at the end it implies that in a weird way he's sort of the perfect match for Towa since he's the one person who he can never properly get a read on or delve into their emotions with euphoria. I'd say Madarame probably has the least amount of characterization of the love interests but he's still miles above Shiki who's only good for memes.

You clearly weren't paying attention if you think that his route wasn't relevant, when it's pretty clearly a deep dive into Towa's past. SD is mainly focused on Towa as a character so it's pretty important to have a character like Madarame to show the path Towa could easily go down. It's basically the one time they got the 'bad rape boy' route done extremely well since we know why Towa and Madarame act like this as opposed to just 'one guy is an asshole and the other falls in love with them because I don't know why not' which was basically Mink's route in DMMD.

Madarame to me comes off as a direct improvement on characters like Shiki and was specifically made for Kabura to show how she's improved as a writer over the years. Shiki's route could be cut and nothing would change while if you were to cut Madarame's route you'd lose a lot of Towa's characterization and someone who can actually show that he can't properly use euphoria on everyone.

the love interests in sweet pool aren't intended to be real love interests. zenya and makoto are little more than game over bad ends. romance/love fully took a back seat to story there to the point where there was practically none at all, only pheromone induced debauchery. and say what you will about tetsuo, but he was written that way for a reason. he's supposed to be this creepy perfect alpha male golira specimen who never shows any form of vulnerability or emotion, only stoicism, violence, rape, and domineering. he isn't likable, and youji spends most of the game scared of him. now I don't like him either, but I don't want to hear about how shitty he is as you praise the NC game that had an unprecedentedly terrible love interest lineup with carelessly shellacked on romance in the same breath. the worst of the bunch, the one who is a watery mix of tetsuo and shiki at that.

The only one who I had issue with was Rei, and that's not even really an issue with Rei himself since he's a likable character I just thought his route wasn't that well done compared to the others, I'd still rank it leagues above a lot of other BLVN routes though.

That's my point though, it's a perfect match for Towa as his current self since all he wants to do is get hurt and get fucked, the route is basically a bad end route for that reason despite having two endings.

Which one should I start? I know a few DMMD spoilers because of how popular it was in 2012 and managed to avoid Slow Damage spoilers so idk. I also just saw that Jast Blue is working on Paradise, I'm looking forward to this one just because I know Makoto Furukawa voices one of the love interests.

It's not hard to choose different routes at all. You basically choose choices in game to get other players routes, and IMO the choices you choose are obvious to get certain characters. I.e., it will be like, 'hang out with x or y' character at one point, so really obvious.
